No, both were nationalists who tried to stand out with extreme rhetorics and persons of the past who didn't do much for the progress of their countries, and especially not for the reconciliation.

So you forgot Mesic's warning to the Serbs of Bosnia if they didn't let go of RS?
Again, there is a difference between being a Nationalist and a Nazi.
Why is a Serb who fight for rights of Serbs to be equal and to hold on to what is his called a nationalist when almost every American who thinks that only Americans have the right to be arrogant and rule the world is called a patriot?
Seems they are ALL nationalists then. The only difference is that some are Nazis and some nationalists.
Again, no comparison.

cerebral assasin please don't talk nonsense about what you call 'Serb riots' in 1968.

They were student protests attended by people of all ethnic groups. Most of the protests involved traditional activities such as sit ins in university buildings and gatherings outside. And it was done with cooperation of international student unions and friendly socialist and democratic organisations from many countries.

And you are incorrect saying that Jugoslavija was a hell whole. Clearly it was not that, clearly people lived better in that time than they lived today.

And also there were parts of Jugoslavija where people of different ethnic groups shared a genuine feeling of belonging. There was no segregation there.

The only example of the segregation of the type you are talking about could sadly be found in Kosovo and parts of Croatia.

Tito made many mistakes and worse and Jugoslavija was far from paradise, in fact Tito ensured that Jugoslavija would die. However, this fashionable viewpoint these days that Jugoslavija was just waiting to collapse, that people were always full of ethnic hate, it is nonsense, the majority in fact believed in good and bad people regardless of nation.

I think Josipovic is great for the region. May Serbia find it's Josipovic soon.

That said, um.... why, in every single picture of him, does he look like he's just finished soiling his pants?

This makes me laugh..remember the peaceful times prior to 1990. What are you talking about the Serb riots in 1968, The Croatian spring in 1972 and kosovo Albanian riots of 1980 yet the Slovenians who hated the Serbo-Croat language. Yugoslavia was a hell hole and if you new anything about it's citizens a majority strongly believed in segregation. Villages, marriage and sport were all segregated between the main groups. It did matter who you were and what religion you belonged too. Yugoslavia was nothing but a bubble that had to burst all because of Tito;s failed policies. If Yugoslavia was so good why did so many live / work abroad? Tadic / Josipovic grow up and move with the times..

People should always remember back to the relatively peaceful times of pre-1990 Yugoslavia, were Croats, Serbs, Bosniaks, Albanians, Slovenians and others worked hand in hand for the number one greater-good; themselves. It didn't matter whether someone else was Croatian or Serbian; if they were a good person, they're a good person.

Even twenty years later, with the political set-up in the Balkans being far different, people shouldn't have any animosity at another nationality simply because they're from that nationality, and simply because of what corrupt, nationalist governments of the time did in relation to ethnic cleansing and warfare. As Nelson Mandela said (I'm paraphrasing, so sorry if this isn't word for word): "You can't move forward unless you forgive the past." Serbia and Croatia should have the strongest economic relations in the Balkans, not the other way around.

Even as a Serb (albeit, a Jewish one), I genuinely hope that this will eventually happen with Kosovo. For the greater good of both Serbs and Albanians, reconciliation between the two nationalities will be the best thing in letting both peoples progress forward in harmony. People shouldn't look at the issue of Kosovo as being political and historical, in fact, people should stop being political in MOST things in the Balkans; remember the times where it didn't matter whether someone's name was Ante, Jovan or Agim? Only then will the Balkans actually be able to move forward for the greater good of EVERYONE.

Remember that EVERY nationality has nationalists, good people, bad people, corrupt people, misfortunate people, victims, aggressors, Mafiosi, criminals and humble people; you treat someone for what they do and how they act, not for their ethnicity, people.

Well done to both Presidents. Far sighted leaders seem to be very very rare in the Balkans.
I recently read an article where a particular philosopher argued there were three stages of "Truth". First is riducule , second is violent opposition , the final is acceptance of that truth as self evident.

Clearly the mindless extremists here are still mired in the first two , but it seems that the vast majority of all ethnic groups are now into stage three. Im very optimistic for the region . If one cannot live as brothers , then at least as repectful neighbours. It is early stages , but i join all those of good will in expressing hope this will lead to better things for all.

"...Nobody was especially interested and I thought how they were presenting Serbs as genocidal maniacs..."

Americans needs a bad guy and a good guy to fuel their propaganda machine. The Serbs will forever be the bad guys so that the americans can justify the unjustice done to the Serbs in taking their territory from them. Unfortunately for the yanks the people of the world are not as dumb as the american public. They know better then the average american citizen. The world knows america supported uck terrorists in Serbia, contras in Nicaragua, Saddam in Irak, Augusto Pinochet in Chile, king Fahd of Soudi Arabia etc etc. And the world will know who the bad guys in the balkans really are.

He's right. And the best thing about the improvement in relations is that it is home grown, rather than through pressure from other countries.

After the failure of Mesic, who showed himself to be a complete prisoner of the past, I'm glad that Tadic found a partner in Josipovic.
