I won't stoop to the level of personal attacks on certain posters here, but I WILL propose a potential theory as to WHY the whole business of the blatant U.S set-up of Julian Assange has inflamed the passions of so many citizens of the diaspora of nations which constitutes our world.

Since its independence, America has been, if you're familiar with Of Mice and Men, the Lenny of global politics.
The older, more experienced nations all around it view it warily, concerned that it may not use its immense power wisely. Conversely though, they also laugh quietly at its stupidity, its naievete, and plot how best to use that might for their own purposes.

This, all you Americans, is how the world really views you: We don't hate you. Hate is, at its heart, born out of love, and the world at large has NEVER loved you. We see you simply as a tool to be used to advance our own aims and plots, as France did in the Napoleonic Wars, as the Mexicans did during their battles against the Spaniards, as Europe did when it needed expendable cannon fodder in two world wars, and as Israel and Kosovo have done in more recent times to support their illegal and unethical land-grabs.

And while it MAY be unfair, yes, American citizens do all tend to be stuck into the 'un-cultured cretin' category. Some do nothing to deserve this, others actively invite it.

And now, your government and the politicians who are seen as the 'popular voice' of political opinion in America, are acting in a hypocritical and neo-fascistic manner. How can a country lay claim to being a democracy when it supresses free speech, especially when the author is NOT a citizen or resident of that nation? You send your troops into muslim countries ostensibly to 'swcure peace' and 'end terrorist threats' - have those objectives been achieved? Not even the most deluded, far-right lunatics among you can say that they have. Going over the reasons why the U.S keeps attacking the middle east never achieves anything, but it does present this question: Is the middle east REALLY where the biggest threat to global security lies?

Since America became an influential player on the global political stage, we have not known a single decade without war, conflict, or terrorism. If we pick at the threads of global events, and look for the one thread which ties them all to each other, we would see that it was American in manufacture.

We, the intelligent people of the world (and I AM including Anmerica's moderate, democratic forward thinkers here too) need to view what Julian Assange has done, and what will be done to him, as a call to arms. Let us give America what it has needed for the past 90-100 years: A global finger on the reset button. If we cut off the head of the beast it has become, we can help America to rebuild itself as a nation which knows it is an EQUAL, not a superior.

Because this, America, is why we don't want to be your friend - Because you're that big, simple minded kid who is used as a weapon by the nasty little dictator with no courage that is your government.

As an American I do not want any part of my government doing ANYTHING in secret.People like Assante remind me of the Watergate journalists who exposed hypocrisy on the part of some government employees. What is to be feared reading what the American ambassador in Rome thinks about Berlusconi?Clinton and Bush can write books stating what they think about people and they get paid millions so what is the problem?Freedom of the press is the most important right in the US Constitution something people like Joe and Sarah Palin have probably never read!A real man stands by his words regardless of who is or is not listening! The Swiss seem to be the only ones who respect peoples right to know!Kudos to them

"The current bunch of Republicans threatening to sink the latest START treaty, simply to display their ability to destroy any Obama initiative"

You conveniently overlook two weak points of the new treaty: - weak verification possibilities favoring Russians
- new reduced number of missiles favoring Russia
Since this weak Obama administration is eager to show some success at any cost it is naturally ready to push an unfavorable one-sided traty. The Republicans simply saveguard the national interest.

I'm not an expert, but I am an American, and I've worked with Russians for years. On a personal level, many are some of the best human beings I've ever known.

On the diplomatic level there's a certain mutual respect - sometimes it feels like we're the only adults in a room full of sulky, hormonally rebellious adolescents not all of whose brain synapses have developed yet. We've both spent decades trying to ensure that atomic weapons aren't used to destroy life as we know it on the planet, while others rush to obtain a weapon they think they'll be able to use for some local advantage. This Wikileaks affair is cleary showing that America has moved from the state of a real democracy(from 1776 to 1913 when the FED was established and enourmous power transfered to the banking elite) to a semi-authotarian state one step short of outright fascism.
The forming of big business cartells(military-industrial,financial,oil) that have encroached the media taking effective control of it,the Patriot Act (which rolled back many individual freedoms guaranteed by the constitution),the agressive unilaterism pursued in the last 30 years and now with Wikileaks outright death-threats against dissidents are the proof of it...
That does not mean that the EUSSR or Russia are better, they are even worse, but America is not the "Shining city on the hill anymore".

Your Government, Republicans or Democrats, care what people around the world think of them, that’s who!
Joe, get it through your head that no one envies Americans; this is a myth perpetrated by your elites since 9/11 as the main reason why the US was attacked “they hate us because we are wealthy and they envy our democratic system” – I heard this excuse on the very same day the Twin Tower were destroyed.
In parts of the US there is poverty that rivals India and that’s saying something so what is there to envy. Your democratic system – you haven’t got one; it’s been Twiddle Dee or Twiddle Dum since the declaration of independence was signed in 1776.
Free speech – it does not exist; sure you can say what you like amongst friends or colleagues, but try for on second to endanger the ‘system” and see how far your free speech goes and no job.
Free Press – never existed, in fact the press is strictly controlled as it was in the Soviet Union – ask the 600 journalist who lost their jobs writing against invading Iraq.
Joe, as you work on Wall Street you’re what the money men refer to as an expendable asset. They accept your company because you say all the patriotic words and you might be of some use someday, but your never one of them and they’ll push you in front of a fast train if it serves their purpose so I would not wish anyone to “die by accident”.
“Human Rights and Amnesty leftist groups” are a product of your intelligent agencies to counteract the Soviet Union’s peace movements against the Vietnam War in the 1960s. They are funded by the west and work for the US even today.
You should have Sarah Palin as President not Barak Obama. Palin is a first class fool and I hate using that word to describe a human being, but there is no other that would fit her.

People like yourself never read the articles but are engaging in personal attacks on other posters. It's not the Russians who are threatening Mr Assange
but the Americans. The wikileaks cables have everything to do with US perceptions
of the rest of the world. But then again i wouldn't expect you to understand because you've made up your mind a long time ago and you see things not how they are but how the country you reside wants you to see them.

Agim, I have seen from your posts, that you blindly love the US because they made possible Pristina's UDI, and continue to support the Albanians there. Not everyone approves of what America does, in fact, maybe more of the world disapproves. Russia has its problems, but the US has its own share of filth and underhanded activities for sure, as these WikiLeaks have exposed. They are not the squeaky clean crusaders of democracy that they try to project.

What a sick comment!
You are speaking for yourself and not "we" Americans.
Your arrogance, boastfulness and negativity are yours and yours alone.

Why so much hate towards USA???
I don't see you writting anything about Ruskies, which is no more than mafia goverment in Kremlin.
(Agim Kelmendi, 5 December 2010 17:21)

If you look more closely there are only two peoples that like the US – Israelis and Kosovo Albanians. The rest range form dislike to outright hatred – that’s a lot of people.

Now with this Wiki Leaks business it shows how tolerant the US is when real free speech is applied not when its to their advantage. I heard this morning two republican congressmen,
Both southern hicks, demanding that Assange be declared a terrorist and that other halfwit, newt Gingrich, demanding that he be described as an enemy combatant.

Sarah Palin, should be President – she’s stupid enough. Poor Obama is looks out of place in the White House considering the idiots he’s surrounded with starting with Hilary Clinton.

You want to know how stupid the secretary of state is; while being interviewed she ranted on about ususal crap about freedom and democracy, free speech , blah, bah and in the next minute while answering a question on Assange she demanded that he be prosecuted for violating US secrets.

I hope the US is silly enough to prosecute Assange because it would turn him into a martyr and force the Human Rights groups such as Amnesty to either go against its master or die.

Joe

Assange isn't important. He's just the messenger. What the leaks reveal is. Stop trying to divert attention by calling him names. We need these people to disclose what those who would govern us do in our name.

I understand he's upset some of the nastiest people in the US (Huckaby/Palin included) and exposed the duplicity and hypocrisy of the US war-mongers.

The world has a lot to fear from the military-industrial complex and its financial puppeteers, and nothing to fear from whistle-blowers.

The current bunch of Republicans threatening to sink the latest START treaty, simply to display their ability to destroy any Obama initiative, belong to the class of sulky, rebellious adolescents, BTW.

Interesting to know, what Americans who are / were living in Russia and Russians who are / were living in America would say.

If you google on sarah + palin + sex you will find things (for real!) Pálinkás Sári made with her husband to entertain everyone. Makes me think, your example has much more sense than you originally intent to.

Sorry, I can't post the link because this is B92 and not B69.
