its simple the BBC ran a programme on FIFA corruption, and so did the media, they (FIFA) didn't like it this was admitted to one of the FA reps. The UK is more geared up for the world cup than Russia we function as a state, our grounds a far better, transport is far better and according to wikileaks the Ivans are mafia run.

It amusing to read this stuff; when the western countries get their way “then it’s a good decision based on an open and transparent process”, but when it’s the opposite then they scream corruption and there should be an investigation.
(sj, 4 December 2010 06:45)

There is truth to it. However if you ask just about anyone, east or west; they'll tell you one thing. Blatter operates like a mafia kingpin. Blatter is the evil of football. He refuses the use of technology to make the game fairer. How hard is it to give each team 2-3 chances per match to use video reviews and challenge a referee's decision? I mean the match stops at least 40-50 times because the player argue over referee decisions. Blatter has captured FIFA. Also how many times has FIFA blackmailed countries because it wants things done the way Blatter wants. What institutions out there control or oversee or even provide balance to Blatter's decision. There is nothing like that.

"You are missing one thing there. Football was once the people's game. It should not be about politics."

Fine, it shouldn't be. But what international sporting event isn't about politics and money these days?

"A world cup in England would have been just what all us supporters needed. "

You guys are going to play no matter where the games are held, but soccer in Russia needs a boost these days. Russians say that because of the crookedness in the scoring and the payoffs, attendance in Russia is falling. So give the Cup to Russia and maybe interest will turn up.

Qatar? Are you kidding me? It makes no sense whatsoever, none.

(Mister, 4 December 2010 00:07) "

It makes more sense to give it to Qatar than to America. The US is too big and too nationalistic to be encouraged to compete internationally. As it is now, soccer is a sport for women and children here, but if it turns into an international competition and the Americans start to go all out, God help us all. Leave us Yanks to our native sports and our World Series between the American League and the National League and the whole world will be happier. And safer - can you imagine rival soccer fan clubs in a country with the right to bear arms?

Thousands of people become british citizens through various criteria ie residence, asylum, marriage etc.But the right for someone to call himself English,Scottish,Irish or Welsh is derived through ancestry. At least this is what the 1981 nationality act stipulates.

I appreciate for all the open hearts here. I am not very optimistic about our football team's WC prospects. But I hope the games will make us close enough to host even Mircea and Joe. The Brits will have more motivation and thus everybody will be eager to see them not only with Argentina but with us as well. So football will only gain.

"That shows good sense. The Independent (which is, though, owned by a Russian these days) said that hosting the WC wouldn't do England any good - it already had the infrastructure, so there wouldn't be a building boom, and it gets plenty of tourists anyway.

Two reasons why I was just as happy to see Qatar beat the US, which isn't even a big soccer-playing nation. We need a lot of work on our infrastructure, but not more stadiums.

Yes, the EPL is international, that is the point! Who gives a flying... about England...it's about football. I suppose the world cup in SA wasn't a total turn off too? It was mince.

I'm wondering how serious the English bid really was. The reports of problems with the current Olympic schedule and costs could have been a factor. I'm sure that in the outset England was serious about hosting the World Cup, but considering most World Cup hosts do not make money back, it may have been in England's best interest to not win the bid, but they had to show up to the draw so as to say "we tried".
NOTE: this is purely speculative and I have nothing to back my hypothesis. Just a thought.

It is not really that we lost, it is more the scale of the defeat. How come only two votes? One of them was from an Englishman. You'd have at least expect us to come second. We did better in our 2006 attempted bid with five votes. However I think Russia is a great choice, they'll put on a great world cup and it will help develop the sport more with Russia being a new frontier.

Dave

pre 13 godina

The controversy's not so much about the fact that Russia won - they started as favourites and had many things in their favour, being a major football country with significant resources to bring to it and also acknowledging the fact that Eastern Europe has never hosted the tournament. What's confusing people in England is the scale of the defeat, only registering two votes and coming fourth, despite the high technical and commercial standard of the bid. Looks rather like Blatter and his mates were upset by suggestions in our press that they were anything except totally morally upright, perish the thought.

Whatever, I'm looking forward to the tournament, distant though it is, and reckon it will be a good thing for Russia. Not so sure about Qatar in 2022 though - that really is a weird choice.

Speaking as an English person I am sorry that we won't be hosting the World Cup, but think that our national attitude does need to change. Plus obviously when so much was spent (over £400 million?!) on the campaign to get 2 votes, that's a major failure!

But congratulations to Russia, and I am ashamed that as a country we can't be more gracious in defeat. Apparently some in the media were questioning whether we should still have Russian players in the league.

Good luck to them and I am sure they'll do a great job.

Isn't the answer obvious from the votes? They don't want you as hosts. Accept your defeat and grow up!

Zoran

Yep, England most certainly will find this a bitter pill to swallow especially against a country like Russia.

Using the non-sense excuse of corruption is pretty weak, not because it doesn't exist but it always has existed and always will. Greed is part of basic human nature. Each side attempts to get an edge over the other and having "Russia is a mafia state" on the front pages of major UK media outlets on the day of voting can also be considered dirty. What about the Atlanta Olympic scandal when IOC members were being bribed by the US?

Russia played the game well and deservedly won. Congratulations once again to Russia and it will be a great opportunity to visit parts of the country I wouldn't normally consider.

the english rhyming slang for it.

It amusing to read this stuff; when the western countries get their way “then it’s a good decision based on an open and transparent process”, but when it’s the opposite then they scream corruption and there should be an investigation.

London has the 2012 Olympics, I think that's enough for one country to host a world sporting event in one decade. Russia is a super choice, although, Belgrade would have been better. Maybe we will bid for it one day?

I appreciate for all the open hearts here. I am not very optimistic about our football team's WC prospects. But I hope the games will make us close enough to host even Mircea and Joe. The Brits will have more motivation and thus everybody will be eager to see them not only with Argentina but with us as well. So football will only gain.

I know how you feel, I've been told that I'm Albanian, Croatian, a Turk, a German EU Federalist, Georgian, an Arab, Macedonian and a Muslim all because apparently British/ English people do not have my opinions therefore I can't possibly be British/ English.

Thousands of people become british citizens through various criteria ie residence, asylum, marriage etc.But the right for someone to call himself English,Scottish,Irish or Welsh is derived through ancestry. At least this is what the 1981 nationality act stipulates.

There is nothing like that.

its simple the BBC ran a programme on FIFA corruption, and so did the media, they (FIFA) didn't like it this was admitted to one of the FA reps. The UK is more geared up for the world cup than Russia we function as a state, our grounds a far better, transport is far better and according to wikileaks the Ivans are mafia run.
