"This WikiLeaks guy remind me of those Soviet dissidents of the past. But now, the target is the us.

Guess who it took a lot more guts to challenge. And guess who actually found information contrary to what the government was claiming.

"It seems perhaps they don't want 'independence' at all, but rather to keep Camp Landsteal in an international protectorate under 1244. It has all sorts of uses and benefits for them.

"It seems..." - Based on exactly what? Did you find anything in the cables that doesn't bear out what the US and EU haven't been saying all along? You really attribute almost magical powers, or at least supreme diplomatic influence, to the US: if it didn't achieve something it wanted, obviously it really didn't want it? And obviously, I suppose, since the cables make the US look well-intentioned if not all-powerful, they must have been released by the CIA (or Israel)? - another theory making the rounds. Leave the paranoid explanations to the Arabs, they have centuries of practice at it. In "Why I Am Not a Muslim" the author says it's due to a history of powerlessness following a long-ago period of strength and prestige.

Just like the arms race sank the Soviet Union, the "Grand Game" will sink the usa. The us government is now calling for sacrifices by the american people and not cuts on the government. This WikiLeaks guy remind me of those Soviet dissidents of the past. But now, the target is the us.

''You hit the nail on the head, Kate. Kosovo was always in the best interest of the US, not to give independence to the Albanians. When you really think about it, what does the US care about who lays claim to KiM?
(winston, 2 December 2010 15:56) ''

So, by drawing a rough conclusion, Serbia is elongating US presence in the region by not reckognising the indipendence ... I knew there was some kind of consiprancy against Albanians, but being an Albanian myself, and by default a USA-lover, i did not think that Serbia is only following USA orders not to reckognise Kosovo ... which makes me think that our dear neighbours are as USA-lovers as me...why we still fight then?

US and France policy is simple and clear!

these powerwul countrys recognized kosovo a day after kosovo declared its independence that says more than enough. specifically the US has give us albanians more support that any other country in this world in 1999 when they bombed serbia and 2008 when they recognized kosovo and I am very grateful. the commects from serbs here are absolutely worthless.

You hit the nail on the head, Kate. Kosovo was always in the best interest of the US, not to give independence to the Albanians. When you really think about it, what does the US care about who lays claim to KiM? They do not particularly like Serbs or Albanians, it's just that Pristina is a more servile subject than Belgrade ever would be. They (US) got there base in the Balkans, which is what the "Humanitarian intervention" was all about - as for Kosovo's status, I think a frozen conflict suits DC.

"...and put internal political pressure on EU states like Greece and Cyprus to publicly oppose Kosovo’s independence."

@ Zoran - Yes, and it does explain why more pressure isn't being put on Greece and Cyprus to recognise. It seems the US wants to keep some cards up its sleeve to prevent legitimacy of the UDI by the EU.

It seems perhaps they don't want 'independence' at all, but rather to keep Camp Landsteal in an international protectorate under 1244. It has all sorts of uses and benefits for them.

Well, at least we finally have an admission that pressure is being used to force the Kosovo issue.
