Hearing about Serbias military power is like cryptonite for Serbias small and insignificant neighbours. However, no need to be jealous! Serbia is the most powerful former Jug country and its military is by far the strongest. Proof of that is NATOs refusal to fly less then 10.000 meters and its resistance in sending ground troops during the wars of the 90s. Albanians uck were hiding in the woods and croats needed NATO help to fight the Serbs. And the Bosnian muslims had to call in their brothers from arab lands to do the fighting for them.

My grand father spend some 10 year in the 30iest of last century in Turkey and he always claimed that the Turkish Army is the strongest in the world. I am sure if he would have spend some years in Serbia would say the same. But what can you expect from an old man. During the Serb lead YU the Serbs thought they were high and mighty with their well equipped behind the times JNA. During the twisted ' Balkan Wars' the Serbs were defeated from Slovenia all they way to the backstreets of Kosova. What gives the Serbs the right to claim superiority over it's neighbours. You want another Balkan War you can't win. It's not about how many men you have or the firepower it's the heart of the man wishing to fight. Vukovar was a perfect example of the Serb leadership sending men to the front with no intention of fighting. The VS may be a big army with modern weaponary but will always lack bravery - that's why they were never sent to defend Krajina. My old man used to say..'When it comes to 'Close Combat Fighting' The Serbs are like the Italians, one gear forward 6 in reverse......

Serbia does have some of the most up to dat equipment. They are getting 25 new fighters, modernizing 212 m-84 tanks to being equal to the t-90, they are purchasing 200 new IFVs, modernizing 562 APCs, and replacing the ak 47s with one of the best guns the M-21s. So I would say that serbia has the most modern equipmen tin the region and the most of it after Greece. The Serbian army is the most powerful in the region after Greece but it is not as large as the romanian due to their population

It means., the Army not dependent on US/NATO and 110 counties support in eventual conflict.

It means the Army able to fight war after several years of embargo, against MUCH stronger enemy.

Agim Kelmendi, I beg to differ considering he is a high ranking staff officer in the VS he will have access to a large amount of information on the neighbouring countries military capabilities. I do take the point which you have tried to make even through insulting him; Turkey is by far and away the strongest if considered Balkan, however it is clear that in regards to his comments it is not.
Romania I think is the larger army which has been mentioned and I dont think that Greece counts as a Balkan country either.

Serbs where always the best in the military, for example in the Ottoman empire the elite Janissaries where mostly Serbians(the main Language spoken by the Janissaries was also Serbian)
Furthermore Serbians where recruited by Austro-Hungary to help them fight against the Ottomans.
Later in Yugoslavia the Serbs where the best in the military and Croats for example in Politics.
Why did the Serbs lost in the YU wars?:
Because Serbia didnt fight in the wars it was Serbian rebels in Croatia versus the Croatian army, it was Bosnian Serbs versus Croats and Muslims, in kosovo it was Serbian police versus KLA and not Serbian Military from Serbia, (yes they fought until 1991 in which they overrun Vukovar and Dubrovnik) but after that stopped attacks.
I believe if Serbia joined the wars it would easily overrun all former ex YU states!

In times when all Balkan try to enter EU, all countries claim to build bridges and open frontiers, the DM of one country that holds in its political/military unconscious many misdeeds (please read crimes), states that his army is the strongest in the region and that can not easily defeated. Does he know that Croatia, Albania, Greece and Turkey are part of NATO? Does he know what this means?

Albania has the highest railway bridge in the balkans since 1960 or sth...it is 2010 and serbia can not break that record, not that serbs can't, but they don't need such briges becaus our terrains are different ...airport in kukes was finished one year ago... one of the highway tunnel connecting Tirana and Pristina in less than 2 and half hour is 7.3 km long, another is being built in Kosovo 3 or 4 km ...railway connection will probably be ready in the following 10-15 years most probably...with such infrastructure, Kosovo is not a country of 2 millions, but part of a entity of 7 million albanians in total...stalin once stated that sheer numbers of soldiers is a quality in itself, so i guess by means of population we are almost equal ... if serbia attacks kosovo, our brand new anti air missiles of NATO standarts will be enough to protect infrastructre such as roads, railway and airports, even in 1999 serbia was unable to use airforce, think now that it has only 4 mig 29, the others are utdated 21s , the same which albania removed from service 6 years ago, ... just think of it like this, in less than 3 hours our paratroopers and ground forces will be in prisitina, in less than one day thousands of diaspora albanians will join the call for duty and will be in durres as our territorial waters are secure from any attack as serbia has no fleet or airforce capable to attack durres, shengjin, vlora harbours and tirana, kukes airport ...the thing is that albania has to spend to much in infrastrure because of the terrain...serbia might have concentrated its expenditures in army ground forces, but most balkan countries have access to the sea, which is a great advantage considering a war situation ... one small war ship costs 10x the latest mig. No country in the world has ever been able to win a modern war with no proper access to the sea, and no proper air force... in case of war, supply corridor is important, the reason Italy lost the battle of greece was because the italian airforce was unable to recover technical problems they faced when invading albania,and they practically could not control the air... and they attacked from a front where terrain was one of the hardest in the balkans.. Russia did not use to be a strong kingdom until gaining access to baltic sea, hence why peter the great was one of the greatest leader in history when defeating sweden... geographically, serbia has the weakest position if some kind of balkan war happeens...that is why we hear such propaganda talks from an army general...if you have a strong army keeping it quite, would be smartest thing to do...and not feed people with lies, unless you intend propaganda speech...serbia might have the strongest ground force in the region...but a ground froce can not beat armies which have full air and water support and are nato members at the same time ...

I have had the honour and privilege to have met your fellow Jews in Serbia who fought against fascism, were proud of what they done and loved Serbia & Yugoslavia.

Somebody actually said Serbia's army in 1991 "overran" ex-Yu. Five thousand plus dead JNA in Vukovar alone? Over 20K dead in Bosnia using all JNA equipment and being led by JNA generals and staffed largely by JNA conscripts and soldiers. I could keep going, but there seems to be a hush hush attitude about the casualties suffered by the Serb rump leftover of the JNA between 1991-1992.
We heard "Serbia's army strongest in region" before, and look where that got us. I thought we never wanted to take what wasn't ours?
I thought our history was one of legitimate defence. And when you try to change that by making statements such as "we overran ex-Yu in 1991", it really explains a lot as to our current situation. Because Serbia didnt fight in the wars it was Serbian rebels in Croatia versus the Croatian army, it was Bosnian Serbs versus Croats and Muslims, in kosovo it was Serbian police versus KLA and not Serbian Military from Serbia, (yes they fought until 1991 in which they overrun Vukovar and Dubrovnik) but after that stopped attacks.
I believe if Serbia joined the wars it would easily overrun all former ex YU states!

My grand father spend some 10 year in the 30iest of last century in Turkey and he always claimed that the Turkish Army is the strongest in the world. I am sure if he would have spend some years in Serbia would say the same. But what can you expect from an old man. In times when all Balkan try to enter EU, all countries claim to build bridges and open frontiers, the DM of one country that holds in its political/military unconscious many misdeeds (please read crimes), states that his army is the strongest in the region and that can not easily defeated. Does he know that Croatia, Albania, Greece and Turkey are part of NATO? Does he know what this means?

During the Serb lead YU the Serbs thought they were high and mighty with their well equipped behind the times JNA. During the twisted ' Balkan Wars' the Serbs were defeated from Slovenia all they way to the backstreets of Kosova. What gives the Serbs the right to claim superiority over it's neighbours. You want another Balkan War you can't win. It's not about how many men you have or the firepower it's the heart of the man wishing to fight. Vukovar was a perfect example of the Serb leadership sending men to the front with no intention of fighting. The VS may be a big army with modern weaponary but will always lack bravery - that's why they were never sent to defend Krajina. My old man used to say..'When it comes to 'Close Combat Fighting' The Serbs are like the Italians, one gear forward 6 in reverse......

Serbia does have some of the most up to dat equipment. They are getting 25 new fighters, modernizing 212 m-84 tanks to being equal to the t-90, they are purchasing 200 new IFVs, modernizing 562 APCs, and replacing the ak 47s with one of the best guns the M-21s. So I would say that serbia has the most modern equipmen tin the region and the most of it after Greece. The Serbian army is the most powerful in the region after Greece but it is not as large as the romanian due to their population

Agim Kelmendi, I beg to differ considering he is a high ranking staff officer in the VS he will have access to a large amount of information on the neighbouring countries military capabilities. I do take the point which you have tried to make even through insulting him; Turkey is by far and away the strongest if considered Balkan, however it is clear that in regards to his comments it is not.
Romania I think is the larger army which has been mentioned and I dont think that Greece counts as a Balkan country either.

Albania has the highest railway bridge in the balkans since 1960 or sth...it is 2010 and serbia can not break that record, not that serbs can't, but they don't need such briges becaus our terrains are different ...airport in kukes was finished one year ago... one of the highway tunnel connecting Tirana and Pristina in less than 2 and half hour is 7.3 km long, another is being built in Kosovo 3 or 4 km ...railway connection will probably be ready in the following 10-15 years most probably...with such infrastructure, Kosovo is not a country of 2 millions, but part of a entity of 7 million albanians in total...stalin once stated that sheer numbers of soldiers is a quality in itself, so i guess by means of population we are almost equal ... if serbia attacks kosovo, our brand new anti air missiles of NATO standarts will be enough to protect infrastructre such as roads, railway and airports, even in 1999 serbia was unable to use airforce, think now that it has only 4 mig 29, the others are utdated 21s , the same which albania removed from service 6 years ago, ... just think of it like this, in less than 3 hours our paratroopers and ground forces will be in prisitina, in less than one day thousands of diaspora albanians will join the call for duty and will be in durres as our territorial waters are secure from any attack as serbia has no fleet or airforce capable to attack durres, shengjin, vlora harbours and tirana, kukes airport ...the thing is that albania has to spend to much in infrastrure because of the terrain...serbia might have concentrated its expenditures in army ground forces, but most balkan countries have access to the sea, which is a great advantage considering a war situation ... one small war ship costs 10x the latest mig. No country in the world has ever been able to win a modern war with no proper access to the sea, and no proper air force... in case of war, supply corridor is important, the reason Italy lost the battle of greece was because the italian airforce was unable to recover technical problems they faced when invading albania,and they practically could not control the air... and they attacked from a front where terrain was one of the hardest in the balkans.. Russia did not use to be a strong kingdom until gaining access to baltic sea, hence why peter the great was one of the greatest leader in history when defeating sweden... geographically, serbia has the weakest position if some kind of balkan war happeens...that is why we hear such propaganda talks from an army general...if you have a strong army keeping it quite, would be smartest thing to do...and not feed people with lies, unless you intend propaganda speech...serbia might have the strongest ground force in the region...but a ground froce can not beat armies which have full air and water support and are nato members at the same time ...

Somebody actually said Serbia's army in 1991 "overran" ex-Yu. Five thousand plus dead JNA in Vukovar alone? Over 20K dead in Bosnia using all JNA equipment and being led by JNA generals and staffed largely by JNA conscripts and soldiers. I could keep going, but there seems to be a hush hush attitude about the casualties suffered by the Serb rump leftover of the JNA between 1991-1992.
We heard "Serbia's army strongest in region" before, and look where that got us. I thought we never wanted to take what wasn't ours?
I thought our history was one of legitimate defence. And when you try to change that by making statements such as "we overran ex-Yu in 1991", it really explains a lot as to our current situation. Blame the "Western Media" all you want. You sound like North Korea. Serbia is the west. So is the rest of the Balkans. There is no other alternative.

Samuil...i guess you are bulgarian...there is no army in the balkans that could pose threat to Albania since 1920...only Greece could pose such a threat but only after 1992, you see, in 1950-75 perioud we had one of the most modern armies in the perioud, we were probaly the only balkan army doing submarine manovres around Malta during cold war, and even the 'glorious' yugoslav army didn't dare to mess with us, actually we could have invaded yugoslavia with help of Russia, but Stalin died and politics changed ... our pilots used to fly over italian airspace just for fun, many italian officers who served in Albania during the Kosovo conflict used to tell stories about Albanian pilot acrobacies done over italian bases during their escape from italian interceptors, we used to have the best pilots in the region, even CIA reports of 1960-75 perioud compared our army with the Israeli one to be on the same quality ... In 1999, Serbian army did not fight against Albanian Army, it fought against fed up simple Kosovo Albanians civilians who were ill trained, equiped and organised.

Not that I want to inflame arguments, but I just want to ask a simple question (as it's quite open to interpretation): how do you define an army's strength? Through the percentage of its GDP which it spends on its armed forces? Through the size of its armed forces? Through the amount of money per year it spends on its forces (the last one being my choice)?

By military expenditure (probably the most crucial one, as it gives a general idea towards the technical capabilities of the army):

Romania - $2.6 billion
Croatia - $1.2 billion
Bulgaria and Serbia - $1.1 billion

I have had the honour and privilege to have met your fellow Jews in Serbia who fought against fascism, were proud of what they done and loved Serbia & Yugoslavia.

A word of warning, you will get nowhere with Captain Frisco. The idiots who are saying Bulgaria and planks could defeat Serbia are idiots. Romania has one of the most I'll trained and ill-equipped militaries. They're still usin t55s as their main battle tanks. Bulgaria also has an Bad equipped army for their still using old mig fighters and 200 out f date t72s. Serbia is getting 25 brand new fighters,modernizing it's 212 m-84s to the highest standards, modernizing all of it's 600 apc and getting 200 new infantry fighting vehicles. Serbia has the most modern army in the balkans after Greece and Greece is probably the only country in the Balkans that can come close to defeating Serbia and this would never happen anyway since Greece is on of serbies greates allies.
