Whao! This might Croatian empire did exist, I’m impressed. But why has no one ever heard of it except you Croats?

Seriously, I don’t for a minute entertain the idea of dignify this diatribe by providing a detailed response because that is all it is - DIATRIBE of nonsense by a fanatical Croat whose eyes are bigger than his stomach. A population of just over 4 million people and they think they ruled the world.
For your information Mestrovic attained world status on works based on SERBIAN history not Croatian.
Here is some more news; your Croatia will get smaller very soon. Perhaps you should not have elected Josipovic as president. Oh, the Vatican can’t help you here because they are too busy sucking up to new masters that are further north of Rome, much further and living in a much colder climate. Wait till the Vatican apologies for Jasenovac and openly blame the Croats for this genocide – it’s all coming.

sj,
Under King Tomislav and the Trpimirovic family, Croatia was one of the biggest and most powerful medieval kingdoms. As far as territories stolen, Kotor we can now take up with Montenegro and Bosnia with Bosnia, but all lands to the west of the Sava river at Novi Sad and Belgrade are historically Croatian. Also, the Danube islands such as the island of Vukovar and Sarengrad which was stolen in the last war is still occupied by serbia. Here are some art treasures still not returned to Croatia: The grave of Mestrovic was desecrated by the Serbs in his birthplace Otavice during the 1991-1995 occupation. Some of the original pieces of art from the Mestrovic Mausoleum were damaged, and some were stolen and transported to Belgrade.
Several important galleries of the city of Vukovar have been robbed in 1991 and the stolen exhibits and works of art are still held in Belgrade, capital of Serbia:
• The Gallery of Vukovar, a donation of Antun Bauer, was very rich.
• Treasury of Franciscan Church of St Phillip and Jacob in Vukovar
• Museum of Nobel Prize winner Lavoslav Ruzicka
• The Eltz Palace, museum with artifacts of the famous Vucedol Neolitic culture.
Twenty trucks were brought from Belgrade to Vukovar in December 1991 to plunder the City Museum in Vukovar, as well as the Gallery and the City Library, under the auspices of Belgrade curators. The Vukovar Gallery was left completely empty. One expects the Serbs to return 1648 stolen works of art of outstanding Croatian artists, that belonged and still belong to the Gallery of Vukovar. This is only a part of the overall number of about 10,000 stolen works of art from several Vukovar museums and galleries that are now held in Belgrade and Novi Sad. Till now not a single work of art has been returned. Veliki Tabor contains a part of collection of Antun Bauer, famous Croatian art collector from Vukovar. These works of art were collected in 1990s, after the Greater Serbian robbery of the Vukovar Gallery and the Vukovar City Museum in 1991. Veliki Tabor had a very rich collection of arms, which was stolen in 1920s and 1930s, during the first Yugoslavia, and transferred to Belgrade. This important Croatian historical heritage is held in the Military museum of Belgrade (Kalemegdan).

The trust might not return for generations, especially since serbia has offered nothing as reprepriations and still occupying Croatian territory as well holding stolen art and historic treasures.

Oh, please enlighten us about this mighty Croatian empire that surpassed both the Romans and British; you know this empire that no one but hard line Croats know about. You know about ruling Poland then moving down to Dalmatia etc. Please also list those treasurers stolen. Last time I looked all those great Croat Kings were nothing more than sheppard tribal leaders.

serbians tend to forget that none of the wars were fought on serbian soil. The youth in these other countries that were attacked, who have witnessed their serbian neighbor kill their family and friends, who have experienced the divorce of their Croatian parent from their serbian parent, who have had to live in bomb shelters without water and electricity for months, are not going to easily trust people from other places, many of which did nothing as Vukovar was being destroyed, Dubrovnik shelled, and concentration and rape camps set up in Bosnia. The trust might not return for generations, especially since serbia has offered nothing as reprepriations and still occupying Croatian territory as well holding stolen art and historic treasures.

Wishful thinking highduke. The fact is that Serbian society is less nationalistic than Croatian society.

That is one of the main reasons why Croatia succeeded in its aim of indepdence and why Serbia was so confused as to whether it was fighting for Jugoslavija or for Serbia.

As for the topic its pretty sad and actually a reminder to people in the Balkans what comes in tandem with Europhobia. It shouldn't be that way but those sceptical of Europe invariably have extreme views on national issues. And on the other hand those very enthusiastic of EU integration are supportive of neo-liberalism and the laud sanctity of market forces.

The minority of sensible people can see things in more complex terms, but when there has not been a proper debate on EU issues its no wonder people are so confused and divided.

But I would say that what is happening in Croatia is a massive fail on the part of teachers and the national cirriculum. It seems as if the children are being fed propoganda.

All Croats from Dalmatia and Herzegovina, also many from Slavonia are, like the so-called "Serbian" Vasojevic tribe, merely Albanians who embraced Christianity and Serbian language for political reasons in the Middle Ages. Their social and moral weakness is therefore understandable.

Their youth are less conservative and homophobic than Serb youth and tieir govt & society as a whole are much more liberal than Serb society. Liberalism is ethnic weakness.
