If Mladic were the only obstacle toward the candidate status of Serbia I would say that Serbia would deserve that status with or without capturing Mladic.
NATO with IFOR and later SFOR missions had this responsibility to capture Mladic who that time was under their nose. If they could not or were not willing to arrest him then why ordinary serbs should be punished with inability to use this funds toward bright economic perspective.
This should not be used as cheap attempt to discredit serbian nation.

Come on, give me a break! Gotovina is in, responsible for the crimes committed in the Krajina, but Mladic who is the BIG FISH, responsible for the killing of Croats in Vukovar and 8000 bots and men in Srebrenica is free and well protected by radical Serbs like you. Think before you write.

Thank you so much for caring about Serbia, Gladko, and the advice you often post here as to what Serbia should do to move ahead. Mladic, though is a complicated issue, as you well know. Croatia, Bosnia, KLA all have/had problems arresting their former military leaders that were accused of war crimes. I truct Serbia will close this issue one day too. Until then, keep your good intentions towards Serbia coming. It is appreciated.

Why would the state pay so much money for the guy if indeed he was in their country and accessible to the authorities?

Peter, the government certainly isn't paying that much. It is claiming 1 billion in lost revenue. You know, one of those made up and invented figures so the people blame Mladic for all of their problems instead of the government. Also like the 5 billions euros Serbia was supposed to get for the arrest of Milosevic.

As we can see by the success of other recent EU members, it really looks like Serbia is in fact losing about a billion euros of debt each year, which isn't such a bad thing.

I have said it before and I'll say it again, reglardless of what people think of Mladic, he is saving Serbia in so many ways.

Give me just one reaason why he should bite the aggressive hand that feeds him...
(wtf, 10 November 2010 15:18)

Some reasons below. Each independent from each other.

1. There is a state capture in Serbia. That is how Djindjic got killed. Those people are more aggressive than the hand that feeds him. That hand feeds him the others could kill him. Ask Djindjic. If you're not convinced than who hid Mladic in army owned buildings and who leaks information to him everytime about his capture.

2. Tadic is likes Mladic and agrees with his deeds; in secret not in public. He sees him as a hero of the Serb nation. No incentive handing him in.

3. Mladic has dirt on most of Serbia's politicians, including Tadic. Hence no incentive on handing him in.

4. The hand of populism in Serbia is more aggressive than the hand that feeds him. He could end up loosing the hand that feeds him and being punished by the more aggressive populist Serb hand if he turns him in.

These are just a few. If I spent more time I could have come up with more.

Serbia is keeping on doing the wrong choices. In 1992 when it declared war against its neighbours, and after the war by systematically refusing to hand over its war criminals. The war has been over for almost 20 years, and Serbia is going nowhere. Twenty years after WW2, Germany was again a part of Europe and doing well. Fifty years after the war, Germany is the nation with the best economy in Europe. It's time for Serbia to cope with its demons and move ahead.

Stop being redicolous Bganon/Top, like Zoran said, keeping their masters happy is the puppet regime´s only concern. This is obvious not only in their groveling before NATO/€U/IMF/USA dictats, but as well in serbs miserable every-day life. If Tadic and his gang had any idea about the generals whereabouts he would not hesitate for a minute to hand him over to NATO. Give me just one reaason why he should bite the aggressive hand that feeds him...

"The amount of effort and resources being wasted on Mladic and keeping Tadic's masters in Brussels and Washington happy instead focusing on the needs of the people is quite disgusting."
(Zoran, 10 November 2010 12:03)

Indeed! All of this is only needed because some former stupid government in Serbia didn't do anything to arrest these both alleged war criminals when they have been within reach, some years ago.
And of course these two persons themselves who are hiding and don't wanna face justice are responisble, too. These people are the ones to be blamed.

The real story is that Serbia is wasting about a billion euros a year on an inefficient government and corruption.

We are losing several billion euros a year being aligned with a faultering West rather than an emerging and prospering East.

The amount of effort and resources being wasted on Mladic and keeping Tadic's masters in Brussels and Washington happy instead focusing on the needs of the people is quite disgusting.

The figures speak for themselves. This government has doubled our debt since being in power (2 years) and I wouldn't be surprised if that figure reaches the triple level, however, it has nothing to show for it.

I really do hope the people of Serbia wake up and give Tadic and his sell-outs the boot at the next election.

"Mladić costs Serbia EUR 1bn each year"

Mladić VERY LIKELY MAY costs Serbia EUR 50bn if he is sent to the Hague, when he will tell the true Serbian involvement in the genocide and other crimes against humanity.

So even a bounty of $10bn for Mladic will be senseless since Serbian state security is safeguarding him.
