That link is totally unfair. Many readers won't notice, it is from 1993, SEVENTEEN years ago. "

True, it's old, but you remember the story about the Russian soldier who deserted from the Tsinkhali region to Georgia because they weren't being fed enough? In 2008 or '09 - it was after the war, anyway. Maybe the potatoes hadn't come in yet.

me: duh, that socialism is a total insanity... we have to pick apples, even university professors have to pick apples.. expensive stupidity. And it's being presented to us as "patriotic duty". I actually went and asked politely, what kind of patriotic duty towards Hungary me (as Soviet, not Hungarian citizen) has to perform. I was told - to defend the socialism, together (in apple orchard, presumably).

(Ataman, 29 October 2010 20:50)

Recalls me the goodold times when I served in military at the end of 80s in Zala county. After the basic training we were taken to a cooperative in a viilaGE TO PICK THE WELL KNOW ZALA APPLES .My buddy Robi and I were standing on a metal board attached to a Zetor and collected boxes full of apples. The tractor driver was calle Józsi bá(not a joke) and I often had heated political debates with that guy(despite this he always brought us some home made cake baked by his wife.)and Kálmán bá the leader of cooperative.I often accused them of looking at the world with very communist mind.I was maybe too hot headed and to tell the truth today I miss these Kálmán bás.They did a lot for hungarian agriculture.

Are you joking? OK, I was involved - not in 1992, but in 1974 - 1983, during high school and university, every year. Not with potatoes but with plums, grapes and mostly apples.

Scenario than (1980):

me: duh, that socialism is a total insanity... we have to pick apples, even university professors have to pick apples.. expensive stupidity. And it's being presented to us as "patriotic duty". I was told - to defend the socialism, together (in apple orchard, presumably).

Scenario now (2010):

Nothing to pick, apple orchards sold out for peanuts (or rotten potatoes?) to "foreign investors" - who in turn got rid of them. Nothing to pick, we buy mostly imported apples (much better quality than the pathetic few left in Hungary).

Pick the good solution. If there is none, say "p** t** m**" in Serbian and drink a glass of local apple rakija (probably made from imported apples anyway).

I already made my choice!

Don't forget to grow potatoe's also, so you can feed the men manning the center.Isn't that what Russian soldiers do back Russia?
(Kosova-USA, 28 October 2010 15:22)

My wife HATES potatoes, except the potato salad. So I got used to jasmine rice instead.

By the way: jasmine rice is the most future-proof thing for everyone, regardless where in the world.

Not that I am happy about it, but it's a matter-of-fact.

British, Albanians and Russians have a special luck, by the way. The "red tea" ( = black tea with sugar) is not being consumed as much as the green or oolong - but it's perfect in the north (Harbin area), there and along Amur river it is more popular than the green.

So with "Hong Cha" we are 100% safe and future-proof... as a honorable minority, of course. Tough luck for Bosnians, Croats, Hungarians, Serbs and their craving for coffee.

(Kosova-USA, 28 October 2010 15:22) Serbia will be paying for it and feeding them its Serbian great privilege from Russia’s Kremlin with love. Just like for the south stream pipe dream line Serbia is paying for when they sold their energy companies at only 40% of the going world price to the Kremlin. I think that is what they call brotherly Orthodox love from Putin’s KGB infested Kremlin.
(Lenard, 28 October 2010 21:26)

Sorry to disappoint but Croatia comes into this picture. Why do you think Josipovic is bending over backwards towards Belgrade? Because Croatia is financially unsustainable and technically broke. You see the idea is not to create another Yugo, but to combine the new countries of the old Yugo to function economically as in the old days.
Even the Americans are on board of this idea because they have run out of money just as the EU has its own financial problems.
Naturally, the largest economy in the Balkans will be Serbia and it will squeeze the rest to pay for the potatoes to feed the Russians. Pure and simple.

Don´t forget Serbian traditional history towards the Russian/Sovjet regime. After comicom establisment Tito´s Yugoslavia was face to face action between USSR-SFRY that almost extended to become a full-flegd war. I´m stunned to see the serbian gov be so forward on investments from a former, enemy?!. Under SFRY the Serbian/Yugoslav policys towards Sovjet was totaly infected and according to me that was our best time in history. We don´t need the support of a backward-going country. We don´t need the United Stats support ether, we maneged ourselfs the best.

*

But thanks to history we(Serbia) and the rest of former republics of SFRY has become banana republics!, and a playground for the capitalist gov of United stats and the "renewd" stalinism gov of the Russian Republic.

I urge the citizens of Serbia, Macedonia, Croatia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Bosnia to be more of a critic, the russians DON´T care about us.
