bganon, these things take a long time to build but a short time to fall. It's like building a house of card. If the foundation is weak it will fall in an instant. Why is the EU immune? The Soviet Union lasted 70 years and fell very quickly. The EU has been around for 50 and I suspect it will meet a similar destiny but not right now. Yugoslavia was around for decades also but how long did it take to fall? The world moves in cycles and power shifts.

Who is the preferred party of the EU Zoran? One party, you wish!
Is it LDP, DS or G17?
Or perhaps it is a coaltion between those 3 plus SNS?

Essentially the problem isn't that of what the EU supports. Its the lack of credibility SRS / DSS has with the Serbian electorate that exacerbates the one sided debate on the EU subject in Serbia.

Seselj's extremism sealed the deal as far as EU integration is concerned in the Serbian political context. I think the chances of unseating the incumbent Serbian government are weaker than any time since 2000.

The only way eventual EU membership will not happen is if the EU ceases to exist. And people have been predicting its demise for many years now...

Dear JohnC,

If you are bored, have nothing else to do, can't sleep at night or find your self at a loose end, go read read the Lisbon treaty. Actually don't. Better still use this thing called the internet and search Enlargement+Lisbon+QMV.

By the time Serbia has enacted and implemented (as in it actually works and is not just pretend as is the case of Bg & Ro), Enlargement becomes QMV, Qualified Majority Voting. If you fail to understand this, I'll simplify this even further for you: NO MORE VETOES BY A SINGLE EU MEMBER STATE. Did the capitals help?

Some say ignorance is bliss...

Zoran the answer is that Serbian parties believe that there are votes in the process of moving towards the EU.

I'm not talking about the position of Serbian parties but rather the position of the EU with regard to the potential of losing their prefered party.

I can only assume the stats NGOs collect are proving worrisome for the EU.

Zoran the answer is that Serbian parties believe that there are votes in the process of moving towards the EU.

If they didn't believe there were votes in it, trust me they would not support it openly as they do.

So, if a majority of Serbians opposed EU membership then I might believe your viewpoint to be closer to the truth.

Much of the problem on the EU is caused by the two parties which are opposed to it. We need a serious political party to provide an alternative viewpoint rather than parties that are thought of by many in Serbia in similar terms to the 1990's British conservative 'nasty' party.

"Asked about Serbia's answer to questionnaire items concerning the country's borders, i.e., Kosovo, Đelić said they will be in line with the Constitution, and UNSC Resolution 1244. "

And now the Golden question:

How should any of those 22 (in future with Croatia 23) countries who recognized Kosovo's independence approve this bid? Not even mentioning the fact that it just need one of them to reject it. You don't have to be a prophet in order to say that this will not pass.

"We do not wish to be like Macedonia, which was given candidate status five years ago,"

He needs to learn diplomacy a bit, no need to add salt to FYROM's wounds. It can happen to "others" as well

With 7 articles in the politics section and 5 of them EU related, I've always been of the opinion that they'll only accelerate Serbia through EU membership when they detect a threat to it. That now seems the case considering Mladic has not been handed over. Why the rush now? Are they scared the DS will soon get the boot?
