Vatican, EU oppose execution of Aziz

The Iraqi High Tribunal on October 26 sentenced Aziz to death by hanging for the persecution of Islamic parties, including murder and crimes against humanity, during Saddam's rule.

It was expected that Aziz would've been executed because he has the mother of stories to tell.

During the 1980s, when Saddam was seen as an invaluable ally against the Mullahs in Iran, a number of western politicians paid homage at the court of Tariq Aziz.
Donald Rumsfeld was even pictured watching Iraqi rockets being fired on the Fawr Peninsula.

When Saddam couldn't beat Iran because it was using human wave tactics, they secretly dealt to ensure Iraq had chemical weapons to gas the human waves.The same chemical weapons he was accused later for using them against the Kurds.

Aziz, who could tell the whole story of western involvement in Iraq, before, during and after the war, simply has to be got rid of.

Tariq Aziz's damaging revelations could come just at the time when war on Iran is looking more likely.

Aziz is Catholic. The vatican would not get involved if Aziz were Orthodox Christian. According to the vatican, catholic war criminals must not be executed.

It is sad to see this elderly sickly man murdered in such a brutal fashion.
And most all the accusations against him are false or distorted.
The west's involvement in Iraq caused 1,000 times more destruction and killings.

Iraq was very prosperous and advanced under Saddam, but the U.S. sponsored wars (Iran-Iraq), the 1991 bombing and invasion, the extreme sanctions and continual bombing for years in the "no-fly" zones, and then the more recent invasion and occupation has harmed many millions - hundreds of thousands killed, hundreds of thousands injured, millions displaced and impoverished.

The U.S. has fomented a genocide on Iraq. But the U.S. never has to pay for the millions it has killed around the world.

In Vietnam the U.S. killed millions of civilians and no one had to serve jail time for that.

Now the U.S. puppet regime are going to brutally kill this poor elderly man on false accusations.

Leonidas is right: he's worth more as a contributor to the historical record than as an object of revenge.
