...Whilst at the same meeting Germany officially dropped its support for automatic fines for those countries that lie and cheat about their economic debt and performance to make the french happy. In the UK, non euro member, plans to split the casino activities of banks off from 'safe banking' have also been dropped.

God help us.

See, this is how Brussels is toothless in protecting its own citizens interests. When the french and the germans agree, it is a big "Up yours" to everyone else.

As for this article's subject, it is only the beginning of the beginning and it will be tough going for Serbia. Judging from Tadic & co's rapid adoption of 30 days without trial for 'hooligans' (et tu Tadic), they still don't seem to fully understand what actual reforms mean and still fail to use the tools they already have at hand efficiently. In short, they continue to show signs of political incompetence.

This means nothing - exactly like someone telling you that they will give you money someday but won't tell you when. The hooligans represent the opinions of the average Serb about the eu.

Joe A,

Romania will join the Schengen Area on 27 March 2011.

On 1 January 2014 Romanian citizens will have the right to work in every EU Member State.

Also, Romania will adopt the Euro in 2015-2016.

You call yourself an EU citizen, too bad that people in Western Europe consider Romanians second rate EU citizens. I am sorry to say this, but it is true. I know because I am one a Western EU citizens and I know how people think there (I don't rate anyone second rate though).
As for joining the EU: if it would have been based on economic and social indicators than Serbia would have joined long before Romania. But it is based on politics.
What good has it done Romania? Sure some people got really rich and Romania makes new Dacias but like someone said here "polls showed that 50% of Romanians long back for communist days".
I wish both the peoples of Romania and Serbia the best but it will take a long time before things will trickle down to ordinary folks while the corrupt elites of both countries will line their pockets with EU money.

Whatever the year of accession i just hope that in the meantime the Serbian goverment work harder to help improve the standard of living. Most citizens are begging to find jobs in their own country while other more lucky ones manage to make it to go work abroad.Serbians working in other countries show that they are hard relaible workers but on the other hand their native country needs show better credibility for more investments.Pity still suffering from war repercussions most of which are beyond innocent Serbian citizens. "Ovo je Srbija" you deserve better. By the way I am Maltese and an EU citizen and politics are not my main issue.

"Serbia's accession process to the EU will be long and difficult."

4 years after EU Roma-nia is facing bankruptcy, 50+% of the people want communism back, and Romanions are being chased out of France and Italy.

tom,

I am not Albanian. I am Romanian.

Concerning Serbia, in the best case scenario Serbia will obtain EU candidate status in December 2012 and will begin accession negotiations with the EU in 2013.

This would allow Serbia to join the EU in 2020.

Just look at Croatia. Croatia began accession negotiations with the EU in 2005 and will probably join the EU in 2013.

Tadic and the DS are going down while the EU can only polish some old carrots. The people have had enough of the lies, deceit and selling-out.
