I'm simply stating the fact that the EU has given more money to Serbia than anyone else.
(Danilo, 13 October 2010 01:23)
===================

Exactly what aid?
Are they helping to rebuild Serbia after they bombed it?

Danilo

pre 13 godina

No, Brian.

I was just correcting Peggy's misinformation that Serbia hasn't gotten any money from the EU when, in fact, EU has given the most money.

(Danilo, 13 October 2010 01:23)

"damn the west for forcing yugo to borrow all that money. damn them!"

So wait, first Russian loans are manipulative, but yet it's Yugoslavia's fault for being forced to gut and restructure the state with shock therapy in order to pay back loans. Do you just argue whatever is convenient for you at the time, regardless of inconsistency?

"I'm simply stating the fact that the EU has given more money to Serbia than anyone else."

I believe Turkey is the #1 recipient. But anyway, how much of it is part of the pre-accension instrument? That's anything but unconditional.

But I reiterate, I would think aid would be proportional to how much economic and military destruction inflicted upon a country. Afghanistan and Iraq receive a lot of 'aid' too. And did I mention the EU had blocked normalized trade with Serbia until recently on the pretense of Hague cooperation? No matter, I suppose. Nothing will undermine your narrative of Serbia getting "handouts".

"Yugoslavia was the largest debtor"

damn the west for forcing yugo to borrow all that money. damn them!

as to the aid, I'm not speculating as to the motivation. I doubt "out of the kindness of their hearts" is it.

I'm simply stating the fact that the EU has given more money to Serbia than anyone else.

Brian USA

pre 13 godina

I do enjoy the hilarity of Danilo claiming that Russian loans are 'manipulative' whereas Euro 'aid' comes from the kindness of their hearts. It was the manipulation of western loans and cutting off the credit line that led to the Yugoslav crisis to begin with. Yugoslavia was the largest debtor to the World Bank in the 1980s. IMF sponsored readjustment led to crisis. IMF effectively controlled the Yugoslav central bank and money designated for the republics went to financing debt.

Serbia remains heavily in debt to their supposedly altruistic western friends. More privatizations are on the way.
The idea that Serbia is being given favorable treatment is a terrible joke, just like much of the other nonsense said by the usual suspects about the former Yugoslavia.

You are correct. NATO flew 25.000 missions over Serbia and Kosovo of which 17.000 were attack mission. It resulted in somewhere 2.000+ dead, a destroyed infrastructure, a bombarded oil refinery and chemical plants of Pancevo, enormous environmental damage and depleted uranium poisoning. So far the earmarked 1 billion is peanuts compared to the damage done.

johny

pre 13 godina

And how many European countries have been had their civilian infrastructure destroyed by bombs by EU member states? Or have been subjected to a decade of sanctions and? Oh but I'm sure 120 million Euros earmarked for small business (selling German goods no doubt) makes up for all of that.

So football hooligans resort to violence and the whole country is like that?!?!
There was a Dutch EU MEP participating defending gay rights. That is all good and fair but what does she do to protect gays in Amsterdam? Gays in Amsterdam are beaten up regularly. They are afraid to walk hand in hand or show any signs of affection. Gays in the Netherlands have been harassed out of neighbourhoods. Everybody knows who does this. It are the Maroccan immigrants who do this. But no one is doing something against that. Instead, it is so much easier to come to Serbia or Russia for that matter and bash homophobia there. The hypocrisy!

Peggy

It seems to me you want the handouts, but you don't want to integrate with European values and laws. That is hypocritical.

Such hate filled comments from people here who identify with God and with religion. Why so hung up on sex? Why so filled with hate? Respect to the police who protected those brave men and women who marched. In Ireland these things are a carnival and everyone has fun. Lighten up for 'God's' sake.

Let's have a Gay Pride parade in Berlin next week. In fact, each weekend lets have one in the capital city of each current EU member and then see how many were held without any violence.

mauro

If Holland or EU needs an excuse to refuse Serbia it would be better to find a different one. Some years ago 40 italian supporters were killed during the final match of European Championship of football in Bruxelles... what we had to do ? at least to move the headquarter of EU to another city ! but please! I understand if antieuropean feeling arise among Serbian population. I love and always will love Serbia !

Brian USA

pre 13 godina

Send a bad message to Holland? What moral standing does a coalition government comprised of Geerts Wilder have to criticize others for their attitude towards minority groups? But Holland is a "sovereign government which can't be pressured", but they have no problem blackmailing others.

And who cares what this notorious Serb hating Slovene Jelko Kacin thinks? He's the point man for the EU's anti-Serbia policy. His government is the same one that managed to steal the bank accounts of countless Croats and Serbs after their illegal secession. His is also the same government that embarrassed themselves and their American masters with their premature recognition of the Albanian gangster state in Prishtina. No one takes what Slovenia says about the Balkans seriously.

Kacin, what are you insinuating, that Belgrade authorities instill mind-control on a segment of society that goes against the West, and its so-called morality? I think Belgrade should be proud for the way it handled yesterday's outbreaks of violence from extremist groups. I know tons of people in BG, and not one was throwing anything at a cop yesterday. So how can this low-level politician generalize with his ignorant statements? And to be given press coverage, too. He reminds me of some Serb-hating Croatian and Albanian commentators on this site, that never miss an opportunity to point the evil finger at anything Serbian.

winston

pre 13 godina

Kat UK, billions are poured into countries by the EU/US, where homosexuals are stoned to death for their lifestyles. I am not sure why you are singling out Serbia? Is it maybe because you have personal issues with Serbs? Be honest. BTW, how long before Sharia law comes to Britain?

winston

pre 13 godina

Good work, EU, with this Pride parade you orchestrated and backed yesterday in Belgrade. Have a referendum tomorrow to see how many Serbians are now in favor of joining the EU. I can guarantee you, the numbers pro would be considerably lower than last week. But, maybe that is what Brussels wanted - or, they just haven't got a clue about Serbia, and Serbs?

When are Serbs going to realize, the West does NOT like them. It never did, and it most likely never will.

No matter what Serbs do (or don't do)...the West and anti-Serbs will always criticize and attack Serbia.
What Serbia does is irrelevant, because they hate us anyway. The fact so many Serbs are worried about what the West thinks of us is almost insane. Reminds me of Stockholm syndrome.

Its kind of like the TV show Family Guy, how Meg is always trying to fit in with the cool kids so she makes herself look like a fool by sucking up them, yet she gets no where.

Anyone who knows Serbian history even badly, knows that nothing can be imposed on Serbs for very long successfully.
This entire gay parade and everything that went with it was imposed.

It was not welcome, and never will be.
Those who don't realize this are in for a long battle.

It's time for Serbians to wake up and demand more energy is put into our country and less energy towards an EU where even its own existance is questionable in 10 years time.

The Chinese are ready to build the largest shopping complex in the Balkans and they've purchased land to do this but now the ownership is in dispute. The Netherlands is a perfectly disgraceful place and formerly Dutch country where a popular Dutch politician(Wilders) is prosecuted and threatened with jail and fines for speaking about Islamic violence and sharia law, but the leadership is agitated about a gay parade in Belgrade.

Such hate filled comments from people here who identify with God and with religion. Why so hung up on sex? Why so filled with hate? Respect to the police who protected those brave men and women who marched. In Ireland these things are a carnival and everyone has fun. Lighten up for 'God's' sake.

Danilo

You're misinformed, Peggy.

Serbia's gotten more handouts from the EU than any other country.

A billion in aid committed to in '09

120 million euros from Germany

Notice the shiny new ambulances in BG? Part of the previously mentioned billion.

These are donations, not like the manipulative "loans" from Russia.

who cares about the EU and who cares about this guy talking lol hes a joke and serbia is looking to the east and not the west because the east is the strong, and he should worry about his minorities in that tiny slovenia because soon the minority will be the majority there and the serbs should ask for more rights and more say since they have 60,000+ serbs that live there.

winston

pre 13 godina

Good work, EU, with this Pride parade you orchestrated and backed yesterday in Belgrade. Have a referendum tomorrow to see how many Serbians are now in favor of joining the EU. I can guarantee you, the numbers pro would be considerably lower than last week. But, maybe that is what Brussels wanted - or, they just haven't got a clue about Serbia, and Serbs?

Tanja

The vision of this Slovenian politician must be smaller than a single green pea, when his only words about this revolutionary democratic event in Serbia are words of criticism and hate. And those ugly words to the government that took a risk with this event, to the brave policemen that efficiently protected the members of the Parade, and to the millions of Serbs who DO SUPPORT minorities and differencies that exist in our country. Go get a life somewhere, plz!

Daniel

pre 13 godina

Serbs must not worry about that. It takes time to change the way people feel about hot topics. The parade was an excellent first step. If the parade occurs every year, the opponents will start to accept it as inevitable. Society doesn't change over night.
Holland is a different place; if you haven't been to Amsterdam, you wouldn't understand.

This guy is such a hypocrite! Riots like this happen every weekend somewhere in Europe. For example after soccer games and tennis matches. In my city of Malmoe protesters fought police because Israel was coming to town.

Where was Kacin then? A guess such behaviour can occur anywhere except in Serbia. If you want an excuse to exclude Serbia then at least be honest about it. Besides, no one is happier then me if Serbia is left out of the EU.

Brian USA

And how many European countries have been had their civilian infrastructure destroyed by bombs by EU member states? Or have been subjected to a decade of sanctions and? Oh but I'm sure 120 million Euros earmarked for small business (selling German goods no doubt) makes up for all of that.

How many European countries had arrest warrants for other European leaders?

kat UK - what's all this aid then? Tell us how much and where it's going. If you want aid dependency in Europe then have a look down the road in Kosmet. Precious little makes it up here and long may it remain so - an economy can never become prosperous through excessive aid.

"Pictures of Belgrade under siege that were broadcast across the world are sending out a very bad message about the absence of elementary tolerance toward minorities in Serbia, but also on inefficiency of the state institutions, Kacin said in a press release."

Danilo

No, Brian.

I was just correcting Peggy's misinformation that Serbia hasn't gotten any money from the EU when, in fact, EU has given the most money.

Peggy

It seems to me you want the handouts, but you don't want to integrate with European values and laws. That is hypocritical.
(Kat uk, 11 October 2010 13:11)

What handouts exactly?
I know about loans to Serbia but nothing about any handouts.
You must have Serbia confused with "Kosova".

Brian USA

Patrik

Let's have a Gay Pride parade in Berlin next week. In fact, each weekend lets have one in the capital city of each current EU member and then see how many were held without any violence.
