B92, my comment was just that it sounded funny so I suggested using the word Autumn instead, which would make it more clear. Don't they use "Autumn" in the US? They would have to, right?

What about the book titled "The Autumn of the Patriarch" check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Autumn_of_the_Patriarch

Now I couldn't imagine that being renamed to "The Fall of the Patriarch".

I have to agree with other posters. I'm sure most Americans understand (or use) the word autumn.

And actually US English has only recently become the 'default' language of B92's English language site. When Steve A was editor there were very few americanisms.

I think its a pity really. Its fine for the US to use its own brand of English, but why should the rest of the world adopt the US variant when they have the original to learn?

I was going to let it slide, but - if American English is what you're using, how about calling it the "fall session" (rather than "sitting")?

On "The Autumn of the Patriarch": "autumn" has a more poetic, melancholy feel to it than the every-day "fall." It's also used where there is not enough context to ensure that the correct meaning of "fall" is understood - "The Fall of the Patriarch" would probably be read as "The Downfall ..."

Here in New England, the two words are used almost interchangeably. "Fall" is preferred for headlines as saving a couple of letters.
