"You don't seem to get the whole picture. For Kosovo becoming an EU member is thousand times more important than becoming a UN member. And being "master" of Kosovo means also expenses, subventions. The EU already supports Kosovo economically, not the UN. Since 2-3 countries are the real masters within the EU it means that already now many Eastern European countries as EU members have "masters" too. Since most of those countries get subventions they don't mind having "masters". It boils down to the most important thing, MONEY. In today's world economy this is more valid than ever before.

And Kosovo is about to become an EU member anytime soon?????? Please!

What makes you think the EU (or at least its "real" masters) are flushed with cash at the moment? Neither is the US by the way http://www.federalbudget.com/

What makes you think the EU will splash all the cash that it still have on Pristina? Even if the EU decides to dole out only one penny to Kosovo, Pristina still has no choice but to toe the line -- the last thing it can afford is to alienate the EU. End of the day, "supervised" independence leaves the EU completely in the driver's seat with Pristina having no other alternative but comply.

"Of course you can argue, on the other hand, that the EU probably couldn't care less if Kosovo never enters the UN -- it has got Pristina in the palm of its hand through "sueprvised" independence. The EU is Kosovo's new master now. Why would the EU want to change a good thing for itself?"

Sure they can. Russia and China to block Kosovo's UN entry for starters.

I think you intendid to say "the world does NOT revolve around tiny Kosovo."
You are right. It doesn't even revolve around some of the big Western European countries but most of the time around the USA. As for Brazil I don't want to downplay its importance, its economy with a GDP of 1,574 trillion dollars is the eighth largest in the world. The USA's GDP by comparison is 14,256 trillions. With a population of 192 millions Brazil has roughly 2/3 of the US population of some 305 millions. The numbers are impressive but not compared to the US.
And as for the news on B92 those are generally Serbian posters who directly or indirectly associate Kosovo with Serbia most of the time.

Really good post. Thanks for putting in perspective. May I quote you in the future.

They can be allies but in pratique they can't do anything about the presure Serbia will get from the EU to "accomodate" independent Kosovo.

That may be the case now Joe but as power and wealth transfers eastwards the balance changes. The Balkans are the fault line between east and west so if the Kosovo issue is not negotiated in a fair compromise, it will resurface in about 10 to 15 years time.

These negotiations are an opportunity to bring peace to the Balkans otherwise we can expect more turbulance when those aligned to the east get the upper hand.

Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) are the future and all are strong allies of Serbia. The balance of power is shifting my friends.

your exactly right on that one that's why america is even slowing down with kosovo because they are in major trouble financially and in their weak military.
