Yes, he could finance his defense team the way you suggested.As for his innocence I believe there are many people who believe in it. And many more who would like him to retain the aura of the hero. To achieve this, one may need the judges willing to close their eyes, or able lawyers to persuade the judges that they don't see what they see.
