Jugoslavija asks: "Yes, there are many alternativs to membership to the EU-but why has DSS or SNS not proposed an alternative economic policy?"

Why? Because it's a too complicated issue for them to figure out. What they are capable is to bla bla, to be all mouth and not to grasp complex issue.

Of course there are alternatives to joining the EU. It's no news. If political parties can't open discussion about different choices then the mass media must do it. And all who wish should join in. That's the way to hear views from abroad too. A discussion like that will easily take two to four years. Serbia has time for it.

Any alternative is "give and get".

But I have an itch what Kostunica (and Nikolic) are after: If they managed to get hold of power, they will turn more positive towards EU membership. Now this empty talk is just a Trojan horse to get to power.

Kostunica must make a real reformprogramme, whether Serbia comes in Eu or not. Being honest is not enough. Too much time is lost, including during his time of office. Where is the new generation Serbian politicians?

Believe me when I tell you that the EU will soon become much smaller in membership due to the unsustainable sovereign debt that Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Italy are (and will) be placing on the EU. ALL European banks are trillions of euros in debt due to bank derivatives and their resistance in putting real estate foreclosures onto their books (3% in Europe while 6% in the US). The EU bankers are trillions in debt, with no end in sight. So Serbia should stay as far away from the EU....or risk losing any sovereignty we have left. Kostunica knows this- so should Serbia.

RE: Serbian citizens should demand proposals not empty words

Yes, there are many alternativs to membership to the EU-but why has DSS or SNS not proposed an alternative economic policy?

Why not set up an Economic commission and investigate the following:

(1) EU Integration
(2) Russia/Serbia trading pact.
(3) SE trading pact (Southeastern Europe)
(4) FYR (Former Yugoslav Republics trading pact)

Its time to be held accountable with measaurable action plan, not empty rhetoric.

Jovan, Kostunica sold himself out, when he got bribed by western officials to be the DOS candidate in the 2000 elections. Even worse, they did not go to the second round as they should have back then. Tadis is no better. I am not fond of Nikolic.

At any rate, the EU themselves say that we won't get membership before 2015. I frankly do not think that membership is necessary. Talk of it is only used as a smokescreen to distract the masses from bigger problems that are going on, problems we need to fix ourselves, that have a much bigger priority.

@ Zoran, you shouldn´t stare yourself blind at the exit-paragraph in the Lisbon treaty. Once you are dragged into the EUSSR quicksand, getting out will be much harder....

Fortunately negotiations are capped to 2 years, meaning if no agreement is made within that period then the member is free to go.

I suspect that if a member wanted to exit then something better would be on offer and that offer would be extended to other members.

OK, so it may not be easy but I think for Serbia it will be much easier than exiting Yugoslavia.

Now, will the feast in the East be a big enough offer? The tables are being set now so we will find out in about 10 years.

Who are the political advisors in Serbia?!

pre 13 godina

The decision to campaign almost exclusively on the "EU or Bust" ticket was a strategic error by the DS & co. in the last election and has given the DSS-SNS room to pick up the disaffected vote.

EU Membership is of course the preferable course of action but putting all your eggs in one basket in the political sphere leaves you vulnerable both internally and externally. At any time, a country must explore all options available to it and have good contingency plans in place (and more importantly be seen as having contingencies in place by others). The Serbian Gov't must up its game and stop this "EU or extinct" rhetoric because otherwise we will end up with a coalition government that will lead Serbia into the abyss again. Like I said, the EU is the preferred "end-point" but please don't base Serbia's survival on EU Membership. We've survived worse things until now!

highduke, Kostunica´s is one of those rare politicians in Serbia with credibility.

he wouldn´t sell KiM to foreigners.

Tadic would even sell his mother, it seems. So, he has lost every legitimate right to lead Serbia into the future.

last but not least, there is of course an alternative to the EU, no doubt about that!

so there is rather a problem for the EU, the question of how to get Serbia "on board" - and I am quite sure they will come to reason, since they need to close the gap between Austria and Greece...

Serbia will prevail, it´s just a question of time.

As i said yesterday:

Serbia will finally move on eastwards (possibly already by 2012) tired of humiliating concessions to EU only to recive more dikats, threats, demands and further dismemberment to NATO client states.

Congratilations Serbia! The world is much bigger than EU and your natural alliances esatwards are real friends of yours with better conditions.
Romania will get kicked out of EU by 2014, possibly earlier due to heavy corruption and lack of progress.

--
At least someone finally admits the obvious. The EU and US are having severe financial difficulties, true, but they are still strong and influential even though that is deminishing.

We will need another 10 years before the transfer of power and wealth shifts eastwards sufficiently for us to align much closer with our faithful allies (China, Russia and India). In the mean time, we need to keep the correct balance to maintain peace.

If by some strange reason Serbia joins the EU within the next 10 years, not all is lost as the Lisbon agreement allows us to exit.

highduke

I dont think this is genuine. What do these two have to talk about that they haven't hashed out before? Why is Nikolic making Kostunica seem more relevant than he actually is?
