"According to them, new negotiations will only bring new compromises that the Kosovo officials would make."

-- That's pretty much the idea.

There will be talks. But as Kosovo is still a Serbian province as per 1244 it won't be talks between two countries.

Or do you call talks between the USA and California also talk between two countries?

Much as I admire Kurti for his principled stance for full self-determination for Kosova from the UN-EUocracy, he is dead wrong on this.

Kurti has never been anti-Serb from an Albanian chauvinist point of view; his opposition to the Serb autonomy in the Ahtisaari Plan stems from what he sees as allowing a foreign power (from his point of view, ie Serbia) interfere in his country via its provisions. I disagree with this, but respect his consistency.

What Kurti needs to understand however is that if he wants real independence for Kosovo/a and wants his country to stop being treated like a baby by the international powers and their acronyms ruling them (unmik/eulex/kfor/ico etc), then this requires some kind of working unity and reconciliation between the two principle peoples of his country, even if they won't exactly love each other. Opposing negotiations that are vital for the other community, the K Serb community, will have the opposite effect, regardless of Kurti's intentions. It certainly won't build confidence.

The difference between a principled advocate of total independence and an unprincipled narrow nationalist (in this case Albanian but the same applies elsewhere) is very large; in many senses they ahve nothing in common. But given the complexities of real world situations, that yawning gap can rapidly close. A stance that derives not from a chauvinistic outlook but nevertheless has that impact can distort the direction of a movement badly. While I dont think Kurti has taken that path, and trust he won't, there is the potential that the movement he leads can develop into simply another narrow nationalist outfit if he doesn't think through the consequences of some of his stances.

BTW I agree with Niall's comments on Kurti's right to criticise his government and am impressed that he signed a statement for his release; it is a pleasure to be able to agree with you once a year or so Niall; there is hope yet.

Predrag, I have been saying that for a long time here. Belgrade will not sit at the same table with people that were torturing and murdering Serbs and other minorities in Kosovo just ten years ago. The time is long overdue for Eulex to replace these ex_KLA'ers with credible Albanian representatives. Would Kosovo Albanians ever have sat down at the same table and negotiated with Slobodan Milosevic?

These KAN activist are bunch of loony-toons,and have no clue what they want.
Kosova/o gov. is not negotiating with Serbia, rather to have a dilog as two neighboring countries. I don't know where Albin Kurti got the idea of negotiations! He just loves public spotlights. He needs to see a shrink.
(Kosova-USA, 14 September 2010 12:13)

So let me get this straight, anybody who opposes the kleptocrats in Pristina needs to see a shrink and is a 'looney tune'? That's great logic there. I bet 30 years ago you were geneflecting in front of your portraits of Enver Hoxha and Josip Broz that hung in the living room while calling your Serb and Albanian neighbours who questioned the system 'looney tunes'. Sweet Jesus grant me patience.

Perhaps if you analysed things a little closer, maybe you will find that Mr. Kurti does have many valid points in particular regarding the mismanagement of Kosovo through croneyism, embezzlement, misrule and corruption by a handful of kleptocrats. Kurti is a good guy and recently when he was detained by Thaci's thugs, I signed a petition organised by a K-Albanian friend of mine calling for his release. I may not agree with everything he says but at least like Surroi he's honest and that's good enough in my book.

Your post reeks of the usual nonsensical twaddle that ex-pats sitting in comfortable lifestyles thousands of miles away in the West usually drone on and on about when they have little understanding of the situation on the ground, be it in Pristina or Belgrade.

Only in Kosovo would supporters of a group called Self-Determination write "no to self-determination" on a wall. The unintentional humour just keeps coming..

Zoran

I think this guy at least understands that this supposed "done deal" wasn't really done at all. Serbia has sacraficed a lot to get this far and our government better come up with the goods otherwise the people will turn against them.

I can only assume that all of these secret talks were real and we are now just going through the motions of the agreement already made.

If this was based on reality then I have a pretty good idea where it will lead. More than autonomy, less than independence. Why? Because we are negotiating and that means independence has failed (surpise suprise!!). If independence didn't fail then why would we need to negotiate?

To Zoran,

I have been reading your comments lately. Thanks for the contribution.

I have one question though, and you dont have to answer:

Do you really believe in your statements/comments, or are they meant to provoke a debate (which is perfectly legitimate)?

Predrag

pre 13 godina

Why is Belgrade so willing to talk to these people?
How can you have serious and credible talks/negotiations with terrorists?
Even in the US has a policy of no negotiating with terrorists.

At the very least Kosovo needs a new, non-criminal leadership before any serious talks can take place.
This is not an issue of status, it is an issue of credibility.
The K-albanian leaders have ZERO!

It was cute before but when the temp. inst. go too long without recognitions, it could endanger re-integration talks. Kurti is a realist: he knows anti-UDI countries wont recognize KiM for internal reasons especially when Serbia seemed blackmailed by a weakened West, which Kurti knows lacks its 90s clout and that the global balance of power favors RUS & BRIC in the long run and that the ICJ & ResWars are a way for them to abandon Albanians without losing face.

Well isn't that a surprise... And here folks is the real truth of the matter which has been exposed again for the world to see.

The self determination people never talked, nor did they ever want to. But they were politically savvy and conducted a diplomatic campaign to ensure their vehicle for self determination, the KLA, gently slid from being a noted terrorist organisation, to a freedom fighting operation.

So. Who wants to talk for the actual good of the people?

The path to peace is open if you want to take it and compromise.
