"I know exactly why the US is in Kosovo and if you think that Camp Bondsteel was built for the Albanians then you are totally deluded to say the least."

As a retired US military member who has been in Kosovo for over 10 years, I think I may know more on the subject than you do. I am not Albanian and make no presense that I am, nor Serbian for that matter.

of course.

serbia purchased russian lip service a.k.a "friendship" by selling off its energy future dirt cheap... until serbia ever looks at nato membership seriously, or russia otherwise decides its no longer worth its interests to do so.. in wich case all bets are off and the "friendship" will devolve into a strictly employer/employee relationship as serbia serves as russias glorified gas station to the eu market.

Not so - you must have missed the story yesterday (Express, was it?) about the new center USAID is setting up to teach Kosovars how to design and engineer roads. A separate part of the project will deal with instructions in running the heavy machinery used in road-building. There has been hardly any infrastructure built in Kosovo since 1980, so there will be work a-plenty, and the men needed will be ready for it.

Maybe Serbia will be able to hire some of them to finish Corridor 10, finally?
(Amer, 3 September 2010 22:43)

USAID, hey. The US has an unemployment rate of over 30%; it had regions that were hives of industry prior to the GFC but are now wastelands, and its going to “teach Kosovars how to design and engineer roads”!!!!!! Tell me just how big is this Kosovo that needs skills such as road construction??? Last time I was there I drove from one end of Kosovo to the other in less than a day.
“instructions in running the heavy machinery” this means that they will teach your friends to drive earthmoving equipment – gee that’s a real asset to the skills base of Kosovo. I suppose that once all 10 Albanians learn these skills they will leave Kosovo for the EU to look for work.
I hate to tell you that it’s all talk and BS. It how the US deals with these situations – announce programs and funding but do nothing; then in another several months rename the program and make another announcement. It keeps hopes up that’s all.
As far as Corridor 10 is concerned Serbia does it bit as money comes to hand; it has more than enough of skilled workers, but you might ask the US to take some back home after they finish the course. That’ll happen when the cow jumps over the moon.
Ask the US to established industry in Kosovo or provide money for job creation, forget about road design. You don’t understand how aid is spent. It’s spent on US companies and its employees not on the Albanians.

This could only be written by someone who knows nothing about the real situation in Kosovo, has probably never been there, and has certainly never set a single foot on Camp Bondsteel. Bondsteel is no huge base to be used as a foothold in the Balkans. It's a small Camp that was designed to support one particular operation.
(JohnnyC, 3 September 2010 10:17)

I know exactly why the US is in Kosovo and if you think that Camp Bondsteel was built for the Albanians then you are totally deluded to say the least. They would not give two cents for your people – look a Rwanda. Camp Bondsteel is based on a strategy of having a series of military installations in the Balkans to secure energy coming from central Asia. This was prior to losing the energy war with Russia – now it’s only pride that is keeping them there. Sooner or later they will have to pull out because money is a serious issue in the US.

You cannot immagine how much I enjoyed the Jeremic's:

ICJ is the moment of TRUTH regarding Kosova.

But now it seams that the truth heart to Jeremic and his bully friends.

But no hard feelings- you asked for it.
(ben, 3 September 2010 11:06)

Let’s face it, if the ICJ had “gone Serbia’s way” then the EU/US would have ignored it. The ICJ is a meaningless organization that could at best be described as more of a mediator than a court and nothing else. What you want to hear from the ICJ is the following “Kosovo’s declaration is legal and should be recognized by all nations”. The initial request never included that question because the US/EU were totally against it. This way the ICJ gave a half hearted response; not saying a complete yes, but also not saying no.
It’s all a game of going around and around in circles. In the UN the show will be stopped in the Security Council – then what? Then a new process starts and it starts all over again but it’s all a time waster. What has Kosovo benefit from all these recognitions – nothing, absolutely nothing and what has the EU/US done to improve lives in Kosovo – nothing, absolutely nothing.
You work it out for yourself.

KU - can *you* please read the ICJ opinion. Parts 2 and 3 deal with Kosovo. Part 1 was very clear that declarations of independence are not contrary to international law unless stated otherwise by the Security Council. The fact that it gave examples of cases that were illegal shows that they were talking in a broader sense.

Before you start criticizing others for being I'll-informed you might want to do some reading yourself.

Asked what the ICJ ruling on Kosovo, which said that unilateral declarations of independence in themselves are not in violation of international law, meant for Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Konuzin said that the nature of the conflicts was different

If the nature of the conflicts is different than how come russia claims that the solution should be the same as that of kosovo? Why did russia invaded and recognized Abkhazia? The conflict and the war happened in S.Osetia.

NO, it did not say that. The ruling dealt only with Kosovo's declaration of independence. Serbia asked about Kosovo's declaration of independence, not about all of them. Do these journalists do it on purpose, or are they just not aware of what they say?
In fact, Konuzin himself says that "the nature of the conflicts was different". After the ICJ, even Russia is not talking about Kosovo being a precedent anymore. The funny thing is that Konuzin is saying that the two situations are different because there was resolution 1244 in place. This is what the the supporters of Kosovo's independence have been saying all along. Konuzin is basically saying: "the other part was right, but we will support you anyway". This is how you know you have a true friend in Russia. A true friend follows and supports you in your mistakes.

Moscow has a case in one sense. When South Ossetia and Abkhazia declared independence Russia chose not to recognise. Only when Georgia decided to take unilateral action against the population of these regions did Moscow decide the right course was independence.

On the other hand in Kosovo, if there was a time for independence it would have been 1999. However every country decided the situation did not warrant independence. Then when the situation improves and the future actually looks bright for the region, Pristina and the west change their mind and decide to try to take the region back to the dark days of 1999 by supporting a unilateral solution.

For those of you that blame Serbia, do you think Serbia could actually have done anything differently between 1999 and now that would have stopped independence being imposed?

"You loved west is only there because of Camp Bondsteel and the only money and training provided to the albos is for a police force to keep their people in line and nothing else.

You work it out for yourself.

of course.

serbia purchased russian lip service a.k.a "friendship" by selling off its energy future dirt cheap... until serbia ever looks at nato membership seriously, or russia otherwise decides its no longer worth its interests to do so.. in wich case all bets are off and the "friendship" will devolve into a strictly employer/employee relationship as serbia serves as russias glorified gas station to the eu market.

As a retired US military member who has been in Kosovo for over 10 years, I think I may know more on the subject than you do. I am not Albanian and make no presense that I am, nor Serbian for that matter.
