I thank God that we have Russia on our side. To have a friend you first must be a friend so giving something to Russia for their wonderful support is not a problem in my book.

Don't worry. Russia has made sure that Kosovo is still within Serbia and will contunue to support Serbia in every way we need.
Why do you think the west has not bombed Serbia again? They would in a blink of an eye if they could but thanks to Russia (getting stronger every day) and China they wouldn't dare. I think Serbia did the right thing is making concessions to Russia. It's all worth it in the end.
(Peggy, 2 September 2010 01:23)
First, Peggy if I am not mistaken are you not living in Australia or somewhere other than Serbia. Nice that you have no problem giving away things that do not belong to you in the first place.
Second, you ask why the west has not bombed Serbia again. Have no idea where that is coming from. Just because Serbia is being a pain to the west, does not mean they want to bomb them.
The 1999 bombing took place after many failed attempts and resolutions in the UNSC. It was seen as necessary to stop the violence in Kosovo. There is no such threat today, and I don't think anyone In positions of authority as even entertained the thought of a military intervention against Serbia nor will unless Serbia were to lead some type of military offensive in Kosovo, which has close to a 0% probability rating.
So attempting to connect Serbia's relationship to Russia and the west's "not bombing Serbia" is not only irrational but ludicrous.

Well lets see if our western 'friend' can name a few politicians in kosovo that are prepared to be unpopular setting themselves against power interests in Kosovo? My guess is he won't bother replying, because he doesn't know any...

With the exception of Kurti who has a decidedly nationalist / populist anti governmental position we have a well meaning but stinking rich media magnate, turned politician whose support doesn't really stretch futher than a tiny proportion of Pristina's upper middle class.

As for the claim that minorities vote for Cedomir Jovanovic, well actually no minorities like Hungarians for example vote for minority parties. Jovanovic is popular again among upper middle class families in Belgrade and Novi Sad and particularly among under 30s of that group. His supporters come from the current government's Democratic Party, former voters of Vesna Pesic's Gradjanski Savez and Zarko Korac's SDU.

Those supporters are fed up with the slow pace of change in Serbia generally and sadly they wholesale swallow stories about how adopting a neoliberal system will cure Serbia of its economic ills.

BTW the position of a Jovanovic if he were Kosovo Albanian would not to be against Kosovo independence, he would support it. The brave position Jovanovic would almost certainly adopt would be to support negotiations with Serbia and to oppose nationalism. So Roberto where is this politician in Kosovo?

I think its unfair to compare Serbia to Kosovo in terms of democracy as there are many problems in Kosovo and I have understanding as to why that is.

However, if somebody like Roberto wants to compare we can do so. I love the way he encourages trust and support between Serbs and Albanians!

The fact that he is saying what is not popular in Serbia right now, it could be also a sign of character and bravery. Normally you would go to a doctor who tells you the truth rather than one who tells you are doing fine, even if you're sick.

Don't worry people like Ceda will never be leaders in the Balkans. Certainly not in Serbia. A good reason for Kosovo never to look back as it goes in its own.
(Ruben-NYC, 1 September 2010 22:40)

Ruben -- Cedi may receive something like 10?% of the electorate support, but probably at least 1/2 of that is from members of non-serb minorities. so it is a sad situation indeed, but that nationalism is pervasive, it is pushed from a very early age, and it becomes toxic. we've all seen the end results and they are pretty horrific.

but as i've said, i am personally happy for him that he will never be elected as president. there is no question that in a country like theirs his days would be severely numbered. he and his family have already received numerous threats, that's a part of life there. and for all public dissidents.

so for those of us who care for him, keep it at 10%, that's ok with me.

as for these lies about Kosova (why do some people comment on things they know nothing about??) there are many differing options on the Kosovar political scene, and they are vocal, even outspoken. thaci and his party may rule the roost for the time being, but his opinions and actions are by no means shared by all; in fact many there are plenty sick of him and i should know because i hear it all the time.

HOWever, if these posters mean the attitude towards serbia or willingness to give up on independence -- yes, the people of kosova, and their politicians, are overwhelmingly united. they've learned the hard way, had enough of their blood spilt, thank you very much.

Well said TinyTim,
It looks like Ceda got his marching orders from Guido Weterville and Mr. Hague on their recent visits, and is just repeating what they told him to say. With his completely anti-Serbian policies, which are meant to destroy Serbia, it is no wonder he has to walk around with bodyguards 24/7.

Ruben-NYC

TinyTIM, about 10% of the Serbs support him, so you cannot make him disappear, unless you mean to do with him what you did with Djindjic.

He has the right to speak. If you don't like what he says don't vote for him.

I find it peculiar that Cedo Jovanovic makes a point to go against EVERY SINGLE policy that the majority of Serbia's citizens support including Serbia's own constitution. He goes argues against EVERY Serbian ally nation that has done nothing but try everything in their power to help us, yet he supports countries and peoples that have bombed, massacred and pillaged Serbia and its citizens. This man is an enemy of the State. He should be thrown out forever be declared a persona non-grate. Anyone who supports him or any of his policies certainly does not have the interests of Serbia at heart.

Demi if what you are saying is right then what does it say about Kosovo Albanian mentality that you don't even have a politician like Cedomir Jovanovic, or the 5% of the population that support him?

You are very quick to look at your neighbour's garden when your own is such a mess.

Too, too late. Serbia unrealistically thought that Russian support would secure Kosovo, but the threat of a UN veto has derailed nothing.
Now Russia controls the energy sector to try and change that would 1st be unsuccessful. To try and secure help from the west in the matter would not only unequivocally cause the loss of not only all the claims on Kosovo, but also risk the loss of a viable energy sector completely.
So learn to live with your mistakes and be sure to say "yes sir" when Russia commands.

Demi

It says alote about serbs in generally and serb mentality when an excellent democratic and wise politican like mr Jovanovic don't get elected. This man tells the truth and leaves fairytales where they belong(in daycare) and still the serbian people gives him very little votes. I guess serbian people loves fairytale because all their history has grown up on lies and imagination.
