Niall, you don`t get it, do you? Then I will explain it to you. I was not pointing to the fact that people got attacked in a major city, something what happens in all cities around the world, but to your remarks. You were blaming tourists for being in a tourist area by night which is famous for nightlife activities. The German tourists didn`t do any wrong by being there, even at this time. Your "argument" is so silly euquivaklent to blaming people for being drowned because they went swimming.

Ada is a tourist area for nightlife and apparently some raiders have taken position at that spot. It is necessary to inform the public what happened there. Maybe police will take this issue more seriously and make tourists more aware about the situation. But I doubt that you, as a Pro-Serbian radical are interested in that.
(JohnC., 13 August 2010 09:57)

Gjon,

if anyone doesnt get it, you certainly dont. Now let me try and explain this to you. Tourists when they go to a foreign country take risks. When you or I leave our apartments to go to work or whatever, we take risks.

Tourists are robbed and beaten up the whole time in Dublin in the vicinity of Temple Bar and St. Patrick's Cathedral usually by junkies. Last year in Waterford, the local tourist board was considering temporarily suspending guided tours because of harassment of tourists by vagrants begging for money. Tourists getting mugged in tourist hotspots happen the whole time. What happend the 2 Germans was inexcusable but they just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could happen to you or me. Muggers in general are usually not conspicious. They dont stand in a spot in the centre of the square shouting that they are going to be the crap out of German tourists, now they do? Be honest.

Second point, you will be delighted to know that the BG police have already caught the scumbag so action has been taken. Pointing out the bleeding obvious to you does not make me a "Pro-Serbian radical". Frankly you are beginning to sound ridicolous.

the comments on here are as usually mostly pathetic political vitriol.

If any of these posters would stop to examine the issue (or even read the article?) they would have noticed that the police are claiming the arrested person said that he attacked these tourists not because they were german, but because they 'looked gay'.

Hostility to gays is unfortunately something that all of ex-Yugoland seems to share.

The Balkan countries - including Kosovo - overall are safer than Western Europe, I remember reading. (It was in some guidebook for Kosovo.) Possible reasons - history of Communist control (such governments were pretty good at maintaining a monopoly on violence), less to steal (what the Czechs say to account for rise in property crimes, anyway), less drug use because of the cost, more ethnically homogeneous societies ...

What else?

What do you see, compared to the States, Jason?

Yes, I agree with Niall, this is
"racist bile" painting everyone one in the city of Belgrade with the same brush. Belgrade Is a city of two million people. I live in a Micky mouse town in the North of Ireland with a population of 27,000 people and tonight we have had yet another fatal stabbing ( A young woman stab in the chest) but no one is saying "Bad Irish stay away" as the racist commentators on this site are.

I'm from Turkey and I haven't received a negative reaction yet about that or being a foreigner in general.

RE; Belgrade ROCKS

Belgrade declared world's best party city
If there's one thing Belgrade has never lacked, it's a vibrant party atmosphere and now it's official. The capital of Serbia has been ranked first in the list of the world's top 10 cities to party the night away in Lonely Planet's new guide '1000 Ultimate Experiences.'

From the Lonely Planet guide:

The long years of bad press that kept Serbia off the map have now passed, and foreigners are now realizing what locals always knew - that Belgrade really rocks. With an exuberant population and its legacy as an intellectual hangout, Belgrade offers varied nightlife, ranging from eclectic watering holes for those in the know, to the busy restaurants and bars of the Skadarlija district and the summer clubs in barges on the Sava and Danube Rivers.

Have been to Belgrade many times, Bierfest is great during the summer and many come from all over Europe including Germany.

Niall O'Doherty

pre 13 godina

Niall, you want to blame German tourists for going out into a quarter (Ada Ciganlija) which is known for its nightlife and cafes ([link]), something Serbs always try to hint on when it comes to tourism in Belgrade?

For me, you sound more like someone who understood the embarrassing implications of this incident and try to divert that. But according your "logic", it would be stupid to go out in general.
(JohnC., 12 August 2010 12:41)

Gjon, what utter nonsense. Have you ever ben to Belgrade? Chances are you have not. It is one of the most safest cities I have ever been in. I know the place very well and I have never seen touble of any kind. All the banter is good natured. It looks like it was a mugging.

I am currently living in Dublin right now and it is much more dangerous than Belgrade and has a real menacing feel to it after 10pm.

Here are some of the incidents I have had to put up with over the last while and witnessed.

3 weeks ago I was accosted by a junkie just off O'Connell Street who was out of his head on methadone.

only last week I was harrassed by another junkie as I tried to get on a tram at Abbey Street.

After dark, Abbey Street, O'Connell Street, Marlborough Street, and north inner city virtual no go areas.

Riots in Dolphins Barn housing complex as teenagers battled with police. Local community centre attacked.

Waterford my hometown has seen a big increase in murders and assaults. It is currently in the grip of a major anti-social problem not helped by a huge explosion in heroin and crack cocaine use. I know a policeman and he tells me that Saturday night is just sheer hell. I have been myself attacked on 2 occasions and my best friend was badly beaten up in an apparent unprovoked assault.

You see Gjon, crime happens everywhere and Belgrade is no exception, however next time before you write your racist bile, think.

I hope you're not suggesting that the murder of Taton and the spree of violence that followed was a result of some provocation?

If you are, I can assure you, knowing the owners of that cafe it happened in and speaking to people that witnessed the attack, that there was no provocation.

Last year's violence spree was truly a blight on Serbia.

This, however, is a bit of a mountain out of a mole-hill.

Belgrade, as many complaints as I have about it, is fairly indisputably a safe city.

Demi, are you God or a judge to pretend this???

A a foreigner I can tell you that am travelling the last 8 years in Serbia and for the last couple of years spend more time in Bg than abroad and I never, repeat NEVER had any problems with security here.
I have been visiting most of the clubs on the Danube, Sava, Ada and again NEVER had any problems.

In my life I have been visiting about 40 coutries and more than 200 main cities and I would put Bg before most of them when it comes to security and friendliness of the people.
Even cities like Geneva or Zurich where I use e to work for many years are less safe!!

This being said, a lot of foreigners tend to forget that they cannot behave like animals the very fact that they are not at home, and of course this can always lead to troubles.
What would you do if a foreigner comes to your table and start talking nonsense and being impolite to your girlfriend/wife while being completely drunk???

So I would treat your comment as nonsense apart from reflecting your hatry for Serbian people

Good luck to you with this kind of very poor mentality!!

These stories only receive prominence (and only then in the Serbian media, not worldwide) because of their rarity. I don't know of a single foreigner in Belgrade who doesn't regard it as the safest city in which they've ever lived. Much though the haters would wish it otherwise, Serbia is a foreigner-friendly country - impressively so given recent history.

I agree with you, Niall.

In the UK it's worse, sometimes even in small places. I've known people to be harassed, or even attacked, in broad daylight in front of many witnesses, even police and security personnel whose hands are often tied by political correctness.

Life isn’t perfect in Serbia, and certain things are still better in the West, but random violence or theft on the street, even at night, is relatively uncommon, though I fear 'westernisation' might change that in due course.

In the meantime, many British, and perhaps Irish, too, are escaping the tightly controlled Sodom and Gomorrah that the West seems to be becoming and seeking peace in Eastern Europe where, despite the corruption that we constantly read about, for ordinary people, is an increasingly attractive prospect.

Second point, you will be delighted to know that the BG police have already caught the scumbag so action has been taken. Pointing out the bleeding obvious to you does not make me a "Pro-Serbian radical". Frankly you are beginning to sound ridicolous.

"Personal items and documents were also taken from both victims, said reports.

The incident took place in Belgrade's Ada Ciganlija river resort at around 03:30 CET on Thursday."

When you are walking around that part of Belgrade at 3.30am or indeed any big European city at that hour, the chances that you will get mugged will be higher.

I dont even walk around my home town at 3.30am because I know I will be asking for trouble.

Now it is confirmed that Belgrade is not a safe place for foreigners.
(Demi, 12 August 2010 13:13)

What a pathetic argument. Really. What say you when there are robberies and attacks on tourists in Miami, NYC, and LA?

That's what I thought.

TP

Niall, you want to blame German tourists for going out into a quarter (Ada Ciganlija) which is known for its nightlife and cafes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_Ciganlija), something Serbs always try to hint on when it comes to tourism in Belgrade?

For me, you sound more like someone who understood the embarrassing implications of this incident and try to divert that. But according your "logic", it would be stupid to go out in general.

I hope that Serbia holds on to what it has, it's culture, music, food, and great hospitality for visitors and guests. For those that live in the West like myself, I will tell you one thing...Kuca, Poso, Poso , Kuca. Serbia is one of the safest places on Earth compared to any other country in the west. Read the statistics folks.

It is a common feature of european journalism to report the nationalities of the people involved in a piece of news. Very often perpetuating stereotypes instead of helping to get rid of them. B92 is rarely an exception to this. How would it have sounded if it was: "Tourists attacked in Belgrade". Or "Two men attacked in Belgrade"?

Gjon,

if anyone doesnt get it, you certainly dont.

Be honest.

Have been to Belgrade many times, Bierfest is great during the summer and many come from all over Europe including Germany.

the comments on here are as usually mostly pathetic political vitriol.

If any of these posters would stop to examine the issue (or even read the article?) they would have noticed that the police are claiming the arrested person said that he attacked these tourists not because they were german, but because they 'looked gay'.

Hostility to gays is unfortunately something that all of ex-Yugoland seems to share.
