Could we expect any party with alternative dynamics in Kosovo? Please. Thaci's biggest political rival is back in the Hague.
(Mike, 11 August 2010 18:31)
======================

Actually so is Tadic's. Still, can't compare the two.

I think Serbia has come a long way from Communist era but it is still mind boggling how some people can support a man like Cedo. Clearly these people are in the same league as Biden, Clinton & Co.

"How did he ever get enough support to even for a party? Guess there are plenty of non Serbs living in Serbia and that would be his support base." (Peggy)

-- Think of it this way Peggy: Ceda's party is an example that Serbian politics *can* be dynamic. That there's a party in Serbia today advocating an alternative policy towards Kosovo and can function in parliament is a sign of democratic maturity.

Absolute nonsense. His support base, limited though it is, overwhelmingly comes from jaded middle-class Serbs from the cities who blame the nasty peasants for the fact that they can't lead the comfy life their parents did. For such people, Ceda's pointless rhetoric serves the same placebo function that Seselj's equally empty rants do for the knuckle-dragging wing of Serbian nationalism. Both have lost touch with reality.

He is really shame for Serbia. If Serbia were serious country, police should arrest all people loudly talk against Constitution of the State. Try to say something like that in France for example, and you will be in jail in 30 minutes.
(George, 10 August 2010 23:30)

Arrest someone for stating his opinion about what he thinks is best for Serbia?? That is called restriction on freedom of speech and I can guarantee you, such things do not happen in France. You have been badly miss-informed. As far as constitutions go, they are not written in stone. They in fact are written by humans and can be changed by humans. In developed democracies there are healthy debates about any part of its constitution that no longer applies with the aim of finding ways to change those parts to better serve the people that that specific constitution is intended to serve. This kind of methodology is called progress my friend and the one you are talking about is called regress and stagnation.

Cedo should run for office in Pristina. Albanians love him which says a lot about this man.

To those that support democracy and reform Jovanovic continues to disappoint.

Jovanovic should actually moderate his position on Kosovo saying he is willing to put his personal views behind him and to seek negotiations between the two sides. He could volunteer himself as a member of a government negotiation team.

Perhaps if somebody like Jovanovic was to be included on a Serbian negotiation panel Albanians would sit down and the internationals would recognise the lengths with which Serbia would go to to resolve this issue and seek a better future for Serbs and Albanians.

That would be the most difficult approach, but as we know the Kosovo issue is abused by all for political gain. There are very few people that actually want Kosovo to propsper, rather they want their careers to benefit.

# This man has really spine to fight an igneted by nationalism, revisionsm and religious fanatism environment. He only shows what is real-policy which is sustainable for the future. But it is clear that he stands for a minority. It will take 2 (lost) generations in Serbia until the majority will realize that he is/was right.
(JohnC., 10 August 2010 13:36)

yes, i agree, and we have been saying this for a long time. cedi is like one bright star in the serbian (political) darkness, and he stands out, sadly, as the exception. and yes, it will take generations.

but as long as young people are raised to buy into all of that nationalistic mumbo jumbo, little will change. i would call the entire system of education and media into question in that regard. and other pervasive national institutions as well.

as for joining nato, i personally don't care either way. i would also never agree to send troops to Afghanistan -- why? to die for what? for nothing... one day that war will be over, there will be compromises, and hopefully local people will realize how crazy and dangerous the taliban are and turn against them.

i am more than willing to criticize my own govt., and have done it, very publicly, most of my adult life. it would be nice to see such critical thought here.

which leads me to my thoughts about kosova, and what has really NOT happened there (to my knowledge.) i believe that the vast majority of citizens of kosova have never had the opportunity to speak out, in public, of the terrible crimes that they were forced to endure during the war. there have been sporadic and incomplete investigations, and isolated trials (in the hague, a very few in belgrade) -- but for the great majority, nothing.

this is a terrible injustice, and has only lead to increased frustration, resentment, and often hopelessness.

we need to discuss some kind of Truth and Reconciliation hearings, specifically in Kosova. forget about the rest of ex-yugoslavia for the time being, and focus on where we can actually make it happen.

right now i am plowing thru the OSCE-Kosovo '99 report, which is online, and is filled with individual heartrending testimony from refugees and survivors, over 600 pages! truly mind-numbing. but for anyone so inclined and with the patience and ultra strong stomach, it makes for very compelling reading.

my suggestion is to take the testimony OUT of these dusty documents, and bring this process to life, something like has happened in other post-war, post-conflict situations around the world.

i don't want this to exclude the criminal justice system -- they should be working in tandem. the specifics will have to be decided in kosova, including, of course, the financing.

but beyond all of the usual political fencing (and posturing) that goes on here, we would finally have an opportunity for "common" people, of all ethnicities, to officially testify to the heinous crimes committed against them and their families. it could end up being very transforming.

i'd very much like to hear (serious)comments from others regarding this idea. and i will bring it up with any Kosovar govt officials we can make contact with in the coming months.

thanks and ciao!

At this point, what's the use in proposing a new UN resolution?

Anything in Belgrade's favor will ultimately get vetoed by Washington. They have stated in so many words they are working to block the resolution. Even Vuk himself has admitted its unlikely passing.

Anything in Pristina's favor will be vetoed by Russia. They have made their stance clear for years. The EU withdrew their resoltion citing lack of unity. The US hasn't even mentioned a resolution of its own.

So we're right back where we started with UNSCR 1244: a resolution Belgrade and Moscow want to keep and Pristina and Washington want to replace. Neither side has the diplomatic leverage to move the other.

The best deal Serbs did was to accept the "reality on the ground" and send Serbian knights to Ankara battle where they fought on the side of Sultan Bayazit... and catastrophically lost to Mongols.

That acceptance made the "won" battle of Kosovo a "lost" battle. And losing the best people in a fight against Mongols (when Serbs actually should SUPPORT Mongols!) was an other genial step.

Not sure, does it reminds anyone about joining NATO and sending own people to fight for Serbian(?) interests in Afghanistan.

Ceda is really the Вук Бранковић of Kosovo-legend (not the historical one wher the legend is disputed).
