There are no strict bounderies between languages, ‘literary norms” and “dialects”, or “dialect continuums”. Scientifically the South Slavic dialects at least partially mutually understandable between the Alps and the Black Sea could be divided into three continuums: Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian and Bulgarian. (the latter being the most distinctive with its different grammar – with no inclination but with article.) The Slovenian, although covering the smallest area is more diversive. The difference between the different Slovenian dialects is grater than those between Serbian and Croatian. Yet it is considered to be one language. The Bulgarian dialect continuum was divided onto two languages – Bulgarian and Macedonian. The Serbo-Croatian into four (so far): Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin (in process of creation). As they say, the difference between a language and a dialect is the possession of a flag and am army!

" - Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin, English and French. Impressive eh?? "

Not really. Because of their very slight differences - like local dialects in some other countries - try to count Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin as one language. Otherwise because of your English and French - known as universal languages - I congratulate you.
(Joe, 8 August 2010 00:38)

My point exactly Joe. I am glad that you agree there there are no such languages as Bosnian, Montenegrin, or Croatian. They are all made up languages, and do not exist. It is all Serbian, they all speak Serbian! These people are in denial. I am glad you agree with me Joe. :))

There are indeed different levels of journalism (just like almost anything else) and you not fall belong in any category (and neither do I). John showed so my much grace, dignity, and tollerance in his comment to you and maybe you should learn something from him.

Don't know much about Jovanovic but I think I remember this guy Draskovic. Correct me people if I am wrong but wasn't he the one who split the Serbian opposition when they could have thrown down Milosevic back in the 90's? When Milosevic lost the elections? Was it 1997? If this is him, then he is responsible for keeping Milosevic in power. And indirectly for what followed.

But now he is saying the right words. But what is the value of the right words for the wrong reasons? Can one be a hypocrite while telling the truth? Very interesting.

Just a note to Joe...

I sign my name once; the B92 programming adds it a second time.

The reason I sign my full, real name is because anonymous talk is often cheap and I want to those who take the time to read my remarks to know that I stand behind every word that I say.

I am indeed a journalist and I covered the Balkans from the front lines and across all of the former Yugoslav republics for more than a decade.

I welcome your comments, Joe, and consider them to be just as good a reflection of you as my words are of me.

I always add my e-mail address so that anyone who might wish to contact me to collaborate, or to debate things further, may do so without disrupting this comments section.

Best regards to all,

If you don't like to hear it from Vuk Draskovic, how about listening to a sweet-faced Russian grandmother who heads some institute for the study of Balkan politics - http://www.danas.rs/danasrs/politika/promenom_pitanja_medjunarodni_sud_pravde_izbegao_sustinu_.56.html?news_id=196644

Serbia's case before the ICJ has made everything more complicated for everyone else, she says, without improving Serbia's position. There's little chance of winning at the GA with the current resolution, and what if Serbia loses? (Russians really don't like to be on the losing side - notice how she focuses on the truly irrelevant omission of the word "unilateral" in the ICJ opinion: define the opinion out of existence, and it doesn't matter any more.) "Serbia should have known, it's all Serbia's fault ..."

You comment on John's posting tells more about yourself than about John. At least it is good that you are not trying to hide your degrading attitude. I think it is extremely arrogant that you, as a self-proclaimed business person, thinks that you can give a professional journalist advice about real journalism. In addition, you try to oversell your smartness with your comment about the four languages your claim to know. Writing a dozen business e-mails a day means nothing. We have no way to check them to judge their real level of quality. So unless we have a chance to check your claims personally and objectively you should refraim from making all kinds of glorifying comments. A real business person would be more careful, but then on the otherhand you are more American than your hero GWB and in the US only one thing matters: just sell even if the quality is junk.

Not only does Draskovic make complete sense, but protecting significant sites and heritage is right and compelling. This is something Serbia can win on.

"Serbia was forced to pull out of Kosovo with the Kumanovo Agreement and the resolution of the Security Council,” Drašković said, adding that this is stated in the constitution as well, and cannot be changed.

How difficult is that to understand guys? How many times it is needed to explain to those whom don't want to understand?

I guess there are reasonable politicians in Serbia now days. They are Vuk Daskovic and Cedomir Jovanovic. What they are suggesting is that the current policies of the Serbian government are holding back not just Serbian people but the whole region. \

He is right. It's time to think about the long term. Why break international ties over something that you have no control over. Kosovo is gone, let it go, it's time to move on already.

In real journalism people are not repeating things unnecesserly. In business life I learned to write a dozen e-mails per day in a concise way even though English is only my fourth language.

Cheers!!

"Milan,

In my previous comment please include French, the language of Moliere, Victor Hugo, Balzac, Baudelaire, Voltaire, etc.
(Joe, 8 August 2010 01:32)"

I am not anti-Jewish so do not try to use that to label me. You once overestimate yourself by listing great French. Why not list Philippe Pétain, Napoleon, Sarkozy?

With friends like this ... you need some new friends.

I hate to tell you Peeggy that you actually speak 2 languages. Every language that you mentioned here is Serbo - Croatian except for English.

John Bosnitch
