There are no strict bounderies between languages, ‘literary norms” and “dialects”, or “dialect continuums”. Scientifically the South Slavic dialects at least partially mutually understandable between the Alps and the Black Sea could be divided into three continuums: Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian and Bulgarian. (the latter being the most distinctive with its different grammar – with no inclination but with article.) The Slovenian, although covering the smallest area is more diversive. The difference between the different Slovenian dialects is grater than those between Serbian and Croatian. Yet it is considered to be one language. The Bulgarian dialect continuum was divided onto two languages – Bulgarian and Macedonian. The Serbo-Croatian into four (so far): Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin (in process of creation). As they say, the difference between a language and a dialect is the possession of a flag and am army!
