How can there ever be any peace if there is a unilateral decision? I would like an Albanian Kosovar to explain that to me. Not a diaspora Albanian sitting in some pizzeria in Brooklyn, but an actual Kosovo Albanian living in Kosovo. How do expect the have peace and prosperity for your children, if you do not have peace with your biggest neighbor? Don't you want a solution?
(karlsdad, 31 July 2010 15:23)

Karlsdad
I will answer this question to you as I am Kosovo Albanian who has never lived abroad.
Strange enough your question is not formulated the way it should be. Your question shuld be directed to Serbs who live in Serbia and should be: What do you mean with the peace?
As far as I could see at least from 1989 and on, Serbia can not imagine peace and albanians in Kosovo together. Serbia has stripped Kosovo off its autonomy that was enjoyed for 15 years and therefore albanians off any decent life.
Therefore anything any solution of compromise now for Serbia will be temporarily and not lasting solution as Serbia will not regard any of that. Serbia considers albanians in Kosovo as emigrants and therefore will expell them on the first chance she gets. Serbia has already tested this in 1998 and 1999 in the name of war against the terrorism. The plan of Serbia still stands: First you strip the people off any basic rights and then when they stand up to fight for their rights you call them terrorists and you kill, massacre and expell them from their rightful lands. Therefore there no solution other than full freedom.

Not Albanian, but even Montenegro's split was not through negotiations, it was a unilateral action, remember Serbia was not happy and did not immediately agree.

Serbia may not have been happy but all the states had a right to secede if they wanted to.
The BIG DIFFERENCE here is that Kosovo was never a state and never had the right so not only Serbia can be unhappy but has the law on her side.

@karlsdad

that question is pretty transparent.

it doesnt matter who, what, where... if one group of people in a nation goes ahead and pulls out an eraser on a nations constitution and rewrites it on their own... several times in fact, and then expects anyone else in it to be beholden to it under a gun...

they do not get to have the audacity to complain about unilateral decisions made in reaction....

so why dont you ask that question of Serbs? have you?... there has been ample time and opportunity to do so ever since they and Milosevic set course for Yugoslavias destruction. Its been decades, and many have asked..we are all still waiting for an answer.

simple concept of cause and effect.

oh i see, you are trying to paint a pretty picture of deflecting blame and responsibility... you would much rather forget that kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence is a JUST reactions to those unilateral decisions Serbs have been graciously "offering" kosovo... under threat ... for decades.

rather than make such a contemptible ploy invoking children for Serb apologist spin... send your "think of children" routine and musings on peace right back to Serbs as they are the ones who've managed to war with nearly all their neighbors...not albanians.

Sure Karlsdad!

You are absolutely right! At some point there should be peace between two neighbours. But that peace may come only through truthful and honest negotiations. As long as the international court suits, and resolutions upon resolutions keep coming from Serbia, it’s hard to imagine the light at the end of tunnel.

It’s very easy, inhabited North Kosovo lands by Serbs, should be given to Serbia in exchange for Presevo valley. The exchange may be painful for both. Kosovars may argue north Kosovo is 10 times bigger in size than Presevo valley. Serbs may argue Presevo valley is inside Serbia proper and shouldn’t be negotiated. Their frustrations are understandable, but to have a long lasting peace, it’s precisely what one must do. Negotiate and both sacrifice for peace!

What is the point of having a meeting with a usa that is living in the past? america needs a serious attitude adjustment about its nation building fantasies. Russia needs to wait until america runs away from the Middle East with its tail between its legs. That won't happen until the end of 2011. obama has to get out of there before starting his 2012 re-election campaign.

There are two kind of Kosovo Albanians:

1) The (minority) are the ones I met in Kosovo who were there and in the rest of Serbia or Macedonia to visit their relatives and friends. These people drive cars with German or Italian or Swedish plates. They already have the answer to your question regarding prosperity for children.

2) The (majority) is the rest. All of them hope to belong to the group 1), rarely any exception. They hope, their children will be Germans or Swedes.

Because sadly even if there is peace: there are barely any meaningful, creative jobs in the entire Central/East/South Europe. And I am not even talking about salaries. That is an other disaster.

There are some jobs in Budapest, Belgrade, maybe Skopje. But the entire thing was goofed up in 70-s and 80-s when the communist parties of Yugoslavia and their neighbors begun to kill the R&D.

... and with coming of E.U. the R&D as we know it was killed entirely.

Easy. Look at how Croatia, Greece, Albania, Finland, USA etc etc. became independent. All of them through unilateral moves because the countries they become independent from had the same ridiculous stance as Serbia. Again the world is full of countries that have unilaterally became independent and that resulted in peace. I mentioned some of those countries above. Again agreement is not possible at all time. That is not how the real world works; that is utopia. No Serb will ever agree with any Albanian on just about everything.

Finally the West is recognizing Serbia's resolve.

They don't run when confronted by overwhelming power, and they don't throw tantrums and start threatening and using terrorist methods when things don't go their way. Nor do they take their anger out on their foe's livestock, pets,or their senior population and their property.

Like all the great nations and people in the history of the world, when the going gets the toughest, the Serbs get going--and they don't look back or give a flying duck of what you got, who you may be, or who's your daddy.

Read our history (which no CNNs, or anything of this world can tarnish)--and weep.

There are certain global standards that all people must adhere to, including negotiating agreements. Kosovo's Albanians are acting as if the have an inalienable right to recognitions and other benefits of independence. These have to be earned. Just because the old US government recognized the UDI doesn't mean that everyone must recognize it. It also doesn't mean that membership to the UN and other international institutions is an automatic done deal. I'm afraid those have to be earned too. If Serbia doesn't accept independence, I'm afraid that most countries will not accept independence, regardless of whether the US and GB expects them to. We all know that the US government had an agenda and some in the US continue to pursue that agenda. At this point, though, so many countries are pissed off at the US that it will be hard for them to get more recognitions. For instance, China is very angry by the naval exercises outside their territory. Iran hates the US and many other countries hate GB and Germany. Why would those countries want to appease their enemies/competitors? It is naive to believe that. Kosovo's Albanians bit off more than they could chew and now must live with the consequences; ambiguity.
