Russia's position on Kosovo unchanged

The ICJ advisory opinion on the Kosovo Albanian UDI does not affect Russia's refusal to recognise the independence of Serbia's southern province.

Hey Peggy, tell me one good reason why Russia should continue to support Serbia in this. Russia will continue to support Serbia as long as poking the West in the eye would make sense. But tell me why should Russia oppose the majority of UN General Assembly (I am assuming that the point will come when this majority recognizes K.) What possibly could Russia benefit from this? Huh? On the contrary Russia could use this very well for two russian speaking areas in Georgia, which by the way would care less what this ICJ ruling was about.

As a Great Power, Russia cannot be seen to go back on its promise to support Serbia. On the other hand, it's already gained what's to be gained by doing so (NIS) - and it's no longer interested in spiting the U.S. just to show it can. So it may be time for Russia to have a quiet, but serious, talk with Serbia about taking the deal the EU is offering and agreeing to ignore the Kosovo problem for a while - nobody's asking Serbia to recognize Kosovo itself, just not make a fuss about others doing so. It's possible the U.S. and Russia talked about this during those discussions about the quick and quiet exchange of spies a couple of weeks ago. After all, it's hard to imagine diplomats letting such an ideal opportunity for deal-making go to waste.

What would make Russia do anything contrary to what they are doing now? They can hold that veto forever and there is nothing the US can do about it because they are not alone. You have forgotten China.
They too will stick by their decision. This acceptance by ICJ which was obviously heavilly "guided" by the US is a slap in the face for them too because they have taken the trouble to send their representative to present oral submission to the court. This is something previously unherad of.

So you have Russia and China to worry about. Now why do you think they will change their mind?
You have to get majority in the UN for starters and even then without these two saying Yay you will get a bit Nay.

People for get that Cyprus is divided for much longer time than Serbia/Kosovo and many countries do not recognize that division.
Yet in this case there is extreme and hasty push for "independence" of Kosovo by the west. Reason is, is it is a western project and western agenda and that it was foolish taking something to a court that is mostly in the hands of or heavily influenced by those in the west.

Why does Serbia trust these so-called "international" organizations which were set up by and are mostly tools of western countries.

Serbia should do best avoiding them as they end up harming Serbia.

I think Serbia also made a mistake of reopening embassies and relations with particular countries after it only temporarily closed them due to the initial recognitions of Kosovo.

Because these countries do harm and play games with Serbs and Serbia and these countries do a net harm. They and the EU get Serbia to agree to damaging measures.

russia pays lip service on behalf of serbia (bought and paid for as serbia sold off its energy future to russia...cheaply)

but When the majority of the UN recognize kosovo... It is not at all certain that russia will use its veto... as so many serb apologists still cling to the idea that russia would do so out of "friendship" ...and burn up alot of political capital by running contrary to a majority on behalf of the interests of a foreign state (good luck with that).

but even they do...and ESPECIALLY if serbia develops amnesia and forgets that violence is a bad thing and begins to get uppity and threaten violence.

there is always the possiblity to invoke U.N. Resolution 377 to get around any veto so long as there is a definitive majority.

If Russia stubbornly refuses to accept K. in the UN against the majority of member states, it will completely use its credibility and it will make life even harder for itself and its population. Antagonizing forever Europe and US over a pathetic lost cause for the sake of slavic brotherhood is something that only someone that post in internet blogs could believe.
The road towards complete statehood is wide open for Kosova. Serbia did Kosova a great favor and removed the last stumbling block that could have been used by other countries not to recognize K. Serbia's recognition is not needed at all. All what is need is 2/3 of UN General Assembly and the deal is done.
Great day for Kosova and entire region. This is great day for Serbia too, although it doesn't seem that way for its leaders. The aggressive attitude of Mr. Jeremic bore its fruits.

Who needs Russia anyway? They have always been commies, North Stream or South Stream isn't going to change that. Long live Nabucco!

A good question! And that's why this ICJ ruling is so strange, because it's only about the legality of an UDI, and not about all the other consequences (like secession).

This did work in Russia`s favor..now we can count on them and China to keep albanians in a hole..
But who are we kidding albanians would not know what to do with self governing if it hit them in the face..
They stay what they always were in Serbia-welfare nation.

This stance will change soon, in a year time. Russia doesn't own Security council and neither is the only superpower on earth, on the contrary is far from it. If the majority of General Assembly members recognize K., Russia will have no choice but to withdraw its veto. Russia will have no reason to refuse to recognize K. Security council was designed to preserve security on the planet hence the name. If the majority of UN Assembly accepts K as a member via individual recognitions, they already are implying the fact that K-Independence is making the world more secure. Russia cannot bluntly refuse, after all it's not something that is directly threatening its borders. Kosova is not the only problem that Russia will need Security Council for and Serbs are not the only ally of Russia.

Th Srbian camp has said all along that the court could only issue a yes or no decision on the legality of the Declaration of Indepndence, now suddenly it is the court did not address all these other questions.
Also how does a country declare independence and not secede from the country it has declared independence from?
if this is your best argument, you have none.
