Hi, Ataman -

About Hungarian unhappiness - this is nothing so new as to be attributed to current politics, is it? Long ago (very long ago) I took a course on Hungarian history and culture at college. The professor, an Hungarian, mentioned that Hungary had the highest suicide rate in the world - he attributed it to the population density: he said there was no place in the country where you could go and not be in sight of another person. (An article I read years later attributed the gloom to an aging population living in dying villages, apparently with not a soul in sight - take your pick.)

As for the US, I was amazed to see that it was at 14-15 (tied with Austria). With all the belly-aching in the papers these days about the economy and the nasty mood in Washington, I thought we'd be waaay down the list.

I'm not surprised at the relative rankings of Serbia and Kosovo, though - you can tell this just from the tone of the newspaper articles. After all, Kosovo is coming off a very low starting point - new roads and bridges, police that don't beat people, corrupt politicians being - sorry, allegedly corrupt politicians - being arrested, a route through the Accursed Mountains to the sea ... Anyone would have to admit things are better than ever before. But Serbia is trying to return to the level it enjoyed 20 years ago, altogether a discouraging effort, it would seem. We're going to be faced with something of the same problem here in the US, in the next few years as we put our economic house back in order - let's see how the happiness level responds.

Quatsch. Ask Roberto or Zoran, am I moderator or not. You may ask Joe or Szemi as well - but they don't know me 1:1.

What you do not like is a very typical joking. I am well aware, Albanian humor is pretty different than what we consider funny. American humor is an other chapter. And Chinese humor is a puzzle for me. So don't worry and don't take everything as offense.

The beer brands Carslberg and Tuborg are danish. Also in Copenhagen there is a place called Christiania where you can buy any type of drugs you like. Danes are constantly high or drunk so no wonder they are always happy : )

And poor Serbia. Its been illegaly bombed, sanctionized and has its territory under occupation by immigrant albanians. No wonder they are unhappy : (

As you know Huns are very stubborn people. Its more of who wields the bigger power stick that get their happiness results.
(Lenard, 17 July 2010 20:12)

IMO, not stubborn at all. Just the opposite - relatively easy to deal with. But very bitter because the entire country was stolen. EU membership made it just worse. With a semi-EU status the happiness would be significantly better.

Otherwise the source of unhappiness is easy to determine:

#1: The thieves in the government, corruption
#2: The loser deals of mortgages denominated in Swiss Franc which happen to soar against near every currency.
#3: The unfortunate side-effects of EU membership.

For Serbia or (in your case Croatia) the #3 is easiest to fix (you don't need that EU), #1 is the most tough.

What a load of BS. I suppose that the happiest are Americans – give me a break! The bit that gave it away was Montenegrin are miles happier that Serbia – with 80% living on or below unemployment they are happier because they have freedom and democracy to keep them warm in winter and fed throughout the year. Using the Gallop poll and I can prove to you that the vast majority of Americans love Osama Bin laden.

Ataman could it be that your Americanism and American passport did not wield the results you expect in the Hun land. As you know Huns are very stubborn people. Its more of who wields the bigger power stick that get their happiness results.

Would you please tell us what is your problem with Hungarians ??????

I can't and i think no one here is able to get why you alwayrs refer to them even if the article doesn't have anything to do with them....

quite strange...
(Hans, 17 July 2010 17:20)

Hans, please read the article again:

"The happiest people live in Scandinavia, while in the region, Macedonians (96), Albanians and Hungarians (103) are less happy than Serbian citizens."

Otherwise make your guesses - it's the nose of Cyrano, Hans. I may have problems with Hungarians, Russians, Serbs, Jews or Americans... and I (BUT NOT YOU!!!) am allowed to complain about them to my likening.

BUT YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED.

I know, it's a very undemocratic rule and full of hypocrisy. But that's how Cyrano was about his nose: "My nose precedes me by fifteen minutes"... but no one else was allowed to be critical of it.

The fact, Hungarians are less happy than any country or region in former Yugo is well-known and it's not without reason.

OK, this was the underlying fact of my jokes about the "Zero" kilometer stone in front of Chain Bridge in Budapest being marked as Serbian-Croatian border and Vlora Çitaku being the PM of the country instead of Viktor Orbán.

No offense to anyone, in particular Joe was intent and it wasn't mean literally. But what kind of gangster government is need to "achieve" that is an other question.

Strong political opinion about Kosovo aside - I always said, Hungary is no better off than Kosovo, at least regarding the wage/price relations.

I don't recall Hungary EVER had a government comparable to current Serbian or Croatian. OK, it had: in 1830-s or 1450-s.

But not since!
