You think they would play for Spain if they didn't feel like spaniards? Currently Catalonia is part of Spain just like Kosovo is part of Serbia. As far as the world knows a united Spain won. In southern Sweden (Skåne) they have a different flag then in the rest of the country and they are proud to be "skåningar" (a mix of swedes and danes) but they still support the national team of Sweden. Same thing with England. They have both the english flag and union jack.
Don't try to make this to be something it ain't.

Besides, when albanians become good at any sport you can talk.

And yes, I think the biggest winner of the entire event is Paul the Oracle. Were this 2000 years ago, he would have had a religious following by now.

All Hail Paul.
(Mike, 12 July 2010 18:04)

The entire Paul thing is of course a big parody and a great way to market that terrific aquatic zoo.

At the end I landed up cheering for Paul simply because:

- there were some Far Eastern copy-cats like parrots, etc. (and we did suffer a lot from Far Eastern copy-cats in the past, them stealing good ideas!)

- this is a pretty awkward creature, (undeserved) not regarded as a pet or play pal. Most people either find these gentle and intelligent creatures as plain disgusting or abuse them as a food.

Before eating your octopus meal: they feel pain even worse than humans... really sensitive creatures. This is why I have hard time now to think about eating them. Again, U.K. government is right on with octopus hunting ban.

Answering JohnC. "7 of these 11 players were in fact from Catalonia,"
John, sorry but you are wrong, tha fact that 7 players belonged to the Barcelona FC doesn't mean they were born in Catalonia. As a matter of fact, Iniesta is Castilian, David Villa from Asturias, etc. From the team that played against Holland, Catalonians were Piqué, Xavi and Puyol. And, in any case, this doens't mean they want Cataolonia independence at front, but just autonomy. Hope Kosovo issue could have been solved in that way.

Congratulations Spain for a well-deserved victory! Along with bganon, congratulations are also in order for South Africa for surprising everyone with top-notch hosting. Many didn't think they could pull it off but all voices are saying they were tremendous hosts.

I do have to say I found the Third-Place game far more exciting than the Final. Germany and Uruguay were really battling it out and it's good that at least Mueller gets the Golden Boot and Forlan gets the Golden Ball. The Final match was considerably underwhelming. The Dutch couldn't kick (unless it was Spanish players), and the Spanish just couldn't get up a coordinated attack before Iniesta's goal. I was really dreading this going into penalty kicks. But in the end, the better team won.

I think that was a blow for many Spaniards, especially in this moment were only few hours ago 1.1 Mio people were demonstrating for autonomy and many for independence. I wonder what will come next. Catalonia wants his own soccer team. It would be only fair to say:

Congratulations to Catalonia for the worldcup.

I am glad that Spain won. The Dutchmen played an aggressive, and at times unsportmanlike and dirty game. Spain proved to be the class of the field. I am also glad that a country that didn't recognize Kosovo's attempted land theft from Serbia won the World Cup. Bravo Espana!
(svojgazda, 12 July 2010 14:54)

Yes, but with some black humor we can say: while 10 of 11 Dutchmen did fight against everyone's favorite octopus, one (Arjen Robben) was playing while fighting cancer ("рак").

Good luck and best wishes to Arjen, there is fair play in the game of his opponent - but it looks like he is set to win. Knowing that, the Dutch victory wouldn't be a bad thing either - despite their not very fair football, everyone's obsession with Paul and controversy around Kosovo.

(sorry, forgot the "NO" regarding "fair play" of cancer, my bad).

To me this World Cup did mean a novelty that octopuses are gentle, highly intelligent animals, with brain development at least as high as of cats or dogs and some sense of humor... even that their environment (water) does put some restriction.

Of course Paul was a very lucky parody, aquatic zoo in Oberhausen got a terrific advertisement and I bet now people staying in line just to see Paul.

Wish him happiness in his unfortunately short life. Paul was the best. And octopuses won't be on our diet anymore. They are killed in masses, thumbs up for U.K. that they have a ban on octopus fishing.

As for football... well, that at large this wasn't way to much of it. Some games were spectacular, most weren't. There is no "small team" anymore - now any country has a chance against a major player. Just make sure, the players hit the bones of the opponent the way the referee still tolerates it, that they play the defense very organized and maybe one counter-attack can bring victory for Nepal against, say, Argentina.

I did want the Netherlands to win however I think Spain did deserve to win. They were the better team not just in the final but through-out the whole tournament.

Also I'm really pleased to have a first time winner.

bganon

Traditionally Holland have played more exciting football so I started out wanting them to win but when I saw they only wanted to stop Spain I ended up wanting Spain to win.

All credit to the South Africans for staging a great tournament. But this tournament has generally been based on anti football. Brazil played negative, Holland negative, Portugal negative, France negative, Italy negative (ok thats usual really), England negative.

Only 2 or 3 sides played attacking, to hell with it football one of them was Ghana and another South Korea and Mexico to some degree.

Lets hope that all those sacked coaches are replaced by positive inspired football. In the end this tournament was a disappointment for me in terms of spirit on the pitch.
