However, Mladic is no hero, and the only heroic thing he could ever do for Serbia is give himself up to the Hague.

Yes, the victims do deserve to see him in court.

How about Serbian victims? Don't they deserve justice?
The only court Mladic deserves to be in is a just court and that is not Hague. Hague has set Oric free and he openly boasted about the killings of Serbs in Srebrenica area.
That court has declared Ganjic not guilty and Haradinaj not guilty. Then we have someone like Ceku not serving any time there.
Now you tell me that all these people can walk free because Hague doesn't thik they did anything wrong and we should still send our people there to rot.

Mladic should be tried in a Serbian court. A Serbian court has more credibility than this kangaroo court any time.
It's not about trying Mladic, but where he will be tried. Do you get it now?

"it is worrying that “about 65 percent of the population in Serbia is against Mladić being arrested.”

Question: are 65% of Serbs against Mladic being arrested?

“It is not normal for those who are believed to be the perpetrators of the most serious crimes on the continent of Europe since World War II to be considered heroes by a large percentage of the population,”

Question: do a large percentage of the population consider him a hero?

I doubt the majority care for Mladic at all. He was just one of a number of 'leaders' from what everyone knows was a pretty bad era in Serbian politics. There has been a lot of nationalist propaganda in the past but the noisy ones are no longer in the ascendancy; lots of things that were hidden are now known, and people are not stupid.

What people do feel is that the world has set itself against Serbia and wants to belittle it and steal its lands. But even that they don't care about. Most want to make their way in the world despite the rubbish that has been thrown against them by Milosevic and by the west.

Idiot judgements that seek to label a nation as being abnormal (that's what Brammertz is trying to say) are part of the problem and not part of the solution. If the man does not understand the Serbian people he should not make such statements.

Also, to link EU credibility with the arrest of Mladic is stupid. Saddam Hussain was arrested in a hole, but the "we got him" announcement was pathetically silly. Arresting Saddam was a non-event and did nothing to vindicate the bad policy of Blair and Bush.

Whether or not Mladic is arrested is of no fundamental significance and it should not be labelled otherwise just to enhance the self importance of those associated with the courts.
