Highduke.

According to the last census, ethnic Serbs compose 82% of Serbia's population, no 70.

There's much more support for the EU amongst Serbs in Serbia than you imagine in your strange fantasy-conception of Serbia.

@ STEFAN: 70% of Serbian citizens are pro-EU but 30% of Serbia's population aren't Serbs, meaning that more ethnic Serbs are anti-EU. Smaller EU economies is collapsing. Our EU 'commitment' is conditional on KiM, on which EU has no consensus. Most EU states & Brussels dont want SRB to join. All EU states being NATO members is an unwritten rule and SRB cant join NATO. @ LAZAR: Foreigners owning our economy made us weak in last 2 centuries but in Nemanjic times we owned it.

The only reason behind the abandonment of enlarging the EU is MONEY – Mother Hubbard’s cupboard is bare and there is no more. Even the faithful clearly see that the “emperor has no cloths”.
The seriousness of the EU’s financial crises is not being properly being explained because if they told the people the truth there would be panic. There are very hard and troubled times for all Europe; some are experiencing it already and will not really notice too much change but others are going to feel the pangs of excessive expenditure in the past.
Serbia should not worry about anyone else joining the EU ahead of them because there are no benefits but only more pain. I have relatives that constantly see a “pot of gold” on joining this EU, but I always tell them look at Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary and all the others in eastern Europe and you can expect the same if you’re lucky, but probably worse.
Don’t believe everything you are told in the media.

Croatia's integration is already a done deal...no point handling that issue.

And Highduke...what is serbian economy if not the exact definition of a FAILED economy...and don't rely too much on BRIC...B, I and C don't even know that u exist !!

At reading the serbian posts here, you may think 99% of serbs are against EU...too sad that all polls show a 70% readiness of serbs in favor of it...Frustration seems to lay ahaead for some posters...

Highduke, before we had socialism we were a colony of the west, prior to world war two. Foreigners owned 90% or more of our industry back in the old king's yugoslavia. So, don't be saying that socialism is all that bad. Our workers socialism has been successful. That is one reason why we were bombed in the 1990s - because we were better than those who accepted to become colonies. EU countries at any rate are not socialistic. The private sector owns stuff. Free healthcare does not mean socialism. Don't fall for that american paranoia which preaches that the private sector is god.

These are all idle comments. There is no neutrality in this world and even for Russia, Serbia is more interesting in the EU than outside. But Vuk Jeremic should not complain, but make sure that Serbia does not look like the other Balkan States, causing trouble. Reform. Establish the Rule of Law. Honour a free press, do'nt offend the German owner of Politika(an influential German and free press champion)like Dinkic does. Make sure that you have friends that keep Kroatia out of the Union until Serbia can enter too. Jeremic is one of the best Ministers, but does he have shrewd diplomats in EU capitals? Should be more Machiavellistic. Dont complain: ACT!

I am not crazy about the EU either but with about 20% unemployment - one of the highest in Europe - whichever way you go it will not be picnic. Hard years lay ahead.
