pretty simple.

A society that goes crazy when a small minority want to walk down the street and announce their existence is less civilized than a society that accepts differences is people.

Danilo,

No you clearly don't understand where I am coming from. That you say Serbia is 40 or 50 years behind the civilized world really does show up your own prejudices. It would be interesting to see which countries you consider 'civilized' and whether some of these non civilized countries are in the EU...

Aleks,

I can totally see where you're coming from, but I disagree.

Because Serbia is 40-50 years behind the civilized world on this matter is a reason why statements like this from the president ARE necessary not a reason why they are not.

It was recently the (June 28th) 40th anniversary of the Stonewall* gay rights group. The fight for gay rights in the west took decades and met all kinds of imaginable obstacles, as did that of equal rights for women and the right to vote.

If Belgrade is only doing this to show how 'liberal' they are then this kind of tokenism is not needed. Rather than a parade, effective and enforced non-discrimination law is needed along with time and sensitivity. How is it that Serbia is expected to adopt immediately these same values in next to no time?

Meanwhile, in the civilized(sic) EU, one member state (Latvia) has a parade through its city centre celebrating its invasion by nazi germany... Grim indeed.

*the Stonewall Inn was the name of a gay club in the village (NY) where it was raided by the police and everyone beaten up,

Maybe Tadic can dress up like the statue of liberty and march with them? The truth is he will do anything to get Serbia into the eu because if Serbia is rejected for membership, Tadic joins that 20%.

Well, as you can see, this item 'disappeared' from the headlines now, so I think they read your post. :-)

I have to say that I didn't notice that this item was shown here that long, since I don't visit this site every day.

However, I don't think that Tadic had any influence on this.

I think it is a huge step forward for Serbia to have a president with the guts to at least support initiatives that might lead to a better acceptance of homosexuality.

Good point, but I still fail to see why this pride parade gets so much newstime here on B92. You keep on seeing it and it has been so for quite a while now.

Judging by this, one would assume that it is more important than unemployment in Serbia.

I prefer to answer with another question: in what way does Tadic deny the need of new jobs by supporting a better situation for gay people. I think he can do both and I don't see the if/if situation that you state. Why can't it be and/and? Tadic can support the idea of a gay pride and still see the creation of new jobs as his biggest priority.

There is a particular reason why I chose to compare the issue of a gay pride parade with the unemployment of 1/5 of Serbia's population.

You see, almost 20% of Serbs are unemployed and do not have the means to take care of their families as they would like to. The reason for this is because Serbia's economy cannot cater for them in terms of job opportunities.

The gay pride parade is for some disgruntled gays who feel their rights to officialy be gay are not being recognized by the Serbian authorities.

Please tell me which one you consider should be a priority for the Serbian government at this stage?

This is not nonsense for the people this pride will be held for. I am not a big supporter of such streetparades, but it is about time for Serbia to do something about the widespread homophobia in the country. Even if you do not understand a phenomenon like homosexuality or even if you consider it as something disgusting, nothing more is needed than letting gay people live their lives the way they want, that is all they ask for. A streetparade wouln't be necessary if gay people would have the freedom to live their lives the way they want, without being discriminated by nationalist macho's who consider their own proudness of a higher moral standard, including the violence that comes with it. Serbia is a great country, but a little less of that proudness would make it a nicer place to live in, especially for people who happened to be a little different than the majority.

I believe he is reeling in shock from this news. Still, even when he recovers from the foundations of his worldview, particularly pertaining to that of Serbs, he still wouldn't admit it.

For the rest of us, I am glad that Tadic is dealing with nonsense like this when his country has a 19.2% unemployment rate.

I really like how Mannequin Boris and the gay sitting next to him decided to coordinate their wardrobes for the meeting. That was particularly outstanding!
Boris, supporting the parade would defy the tenets of the Orthodox Christian religion, of which you claim to be a practicing claimant. Let's see if the church will have you back on this...I think not. This shows the further deterioration of moral Serbian society and the support given to its degradation by the highest members of the government.

"It was concluded that the holding of Pride Parade will represent a civilizational step forward showing that Serbia is becoming a safe society for all its citizens, regardless of their differences and sexual orientation."

This would be the sign sent to the world - if such a parade takes place peacefully without interruptions and clashes with nationalistic right-wing extremists.
