Orthodox, Catholic bishops team up to back crucifix bid

The Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) and the Catholic Church in Serbia backed <a href="http://www.b92.net/eng/news/world-article.php?yyyy=2010&mm=06&dd=30&nav_id=68146" class="text-link" target= "_blank">efforts in Italy</a> to reinstate the crucifix in schools.

As in the other topic, I think it is important to distinguish the difference between identity, tradition and culture from just straight up religion.

I would agree with you if only religion was in question, but since Christianity has played and still plays a much greater fundamental role in European identity and heritage than just the worship of God, I have to say that I agree with these bishops.

I bet they support the right to hang the cross. Not to be too cynical, but isn't that a way for them to advertise (for free) to a very susceptible audience?

In countries that mandate separation of church and state, it is inappropriate to display any religious symbols in public places. Fine to do it in a Catholic school, but not a public school. When exceptions get made for institutions such as Christianity, legal lines get blurred and that creates precedent for further exceptions and before you know it, your society verges on anarchy. European countries are not theocracies.
