I would prefer not to be controlled and monitored simply because a small minority of society can't behave themselves.

I would prefer to prevent government, corporations or intelligence services from having access to my private details so they can increase their profit margins or potentially blackmail me. I am not here to be labeled, categorised and numbered.

I am a human being and will not lie down and see mine and other people's rights taken away without a fight.

So yes I agree with the last part of your post, we must fight this move towards control in the name of protecting against terrorism, crime etc.

And I do wonder how you start with such resignation about military complex mafia being the way of things in society but at the end you rally about fighting.

It seems contradictory.

my friend, its the same all over the "democratic" globe. The media-politics complex mafia works in this way.

The point is that, i consider being "free" yet anonymous is a lower level of existence than being non-free yet eponymous.
(eponymous is the opposite of anonymous, these are just greek words, dont take me for a snob or smth!!!)
I consider anonymity to be equal to being animals.
Free humans have a name.
I would prefer a name than a false freedom.
Freedom is not gained by hiding away, but by hard fight.
It was the same always.

pyrros what makes you think that those monitoring you want you to be safe?
If government had absolute control over your every movement, individuals monitoring could easily have access to your children. Or if the government had that much control they could decide what is best for your children, not you.

If you are so afraid of humankind's intentions then what makes you think that same humankind won't abuse the control you give them?

Let me explain a little about how private information in Serbia is used. It is used to blackmail or to bribe politicians into silence. Some political parties have black books on their own members to prevent them from 'independent' activities.

Thus it is very difficult to affect real change. By the way I know the 'I never break the law attitude' of those that don't care about civil rights. Squeaky clean? But its not just about the law is it? Its about being blackmailed about having an affair that if it became public would break up your family, its about a gambling problem, its about being an alcololic.

If George Bush talked tough on family issues and security, you would believe him?

bganon,
i was just pointing on pitfalls and fallacies floating around regarding privacy in the internet.

now, i dont know about Serbia, but in Greece a lot of people are scared about cameras, privacy, etc...
In the same time, we are almost the first truly anarchic state, nobody respects nobody, nobody respects the state, laws are broken like eggs, control is absolutely absent.
So, to be frank, if i put on one hand the .... "freedoms" i would lose (the freedom to abuse the society at will) and on the other hand the absolute nightmare we are living every day, i would support even being monitored in my own house, if my kids were safe...

So let me get this straight, you can say that it is possible to have absolute privacy on the internet. And yet as an expert you support this move by government?

Then explain to me what is the point of this and why you support it? According to your opinion at the very least it is a waste of money and won't work.

How grown up is it to support a policy you know won't work? Hmmm... A lot of 'thought' went into that?

pyrros

of course they pay me, not to "think this way", but just to ... "think". ;)

Anyway, just to get serious, there are at least half a dozen of ways by which you can have 100% secure communications, regardless of whatever central control measure a gvmt has implemented.

In fact, now, in the digital era, anyone can be 100% private, while in your old good days, anyone could intercept and monitor any telephone line at will.

bganon, time for you to grow up, and learn that knowledge is fought only with knowledge, not senseless whining.

bganon

oh pyross world governments would love it if the world were full of people like you!

The sad thing is I think they don't even pay you to think this way...

bganon,
i am in the computer industry, and most often the people complaining about loss of rights are either criminals, anarchists or just brain-washed mainly due to their ignorance.

bganon

Decision makers are loving this. Now another opportunty for blackmail, the use of the dark arts to prevent any change in the corrupt elite and so on.

Pathetic. And sadly equally pathetic that few people in Serbia seem to realise that their rights and being so undermined.
