Generals ar not above the laws during a conflict and should respect the rules of wars. This has nothing to do with nationalities. During the war in the Balkans, too many civilians died because of generals who did not do their job properly, and all should be in jail for closing their eyes on rape, troture and atrocities committed by their soldiers.

I don't know what their are whinging about. Just ask the Americans to pay up, after all it is in their interests that Gotovina keeps his mouth shut about american military assistance to Croatia (and thus US legal exposure to war crimes by its clients) during the war and particularly in the deliberate ethnic cleansing of croatian serbs from the Krajina in operations Flash and Storm.

Greg Kehoe, Gotovina's american lawyer has done other war crimes work on behalf of the United States for previous 'clients' with unpleasant habits.

Most likely the US will reimburse Zagreb in a non-linear manner, i.e. they'll get the money back but by means of a 'grant' or 'non repayable loan' for some fake project or as part of 'development aid' no doubt.

The Croats and Serbs should have just ignored the requests from the Tribunal until people such as Ariel Sharon and George W Bush are indicted.

Peasant Balkan nations send there most decorated to the Hague and assist with paying for their defense. Why send them to the Hague in the first place. Do any other countries in the modern world send their generals to the Hague or is it just us who continue to act with sheer stupidity...
