Don't know what to make of this. On one level I tend to side with the military brass over the elected paper-pushers when it comes to this type of strategery. On another, a Prince can't win wars when his top generals start to go rogue. Regardless, I can see McChrystal getting pissed at Holbrooke spamming his inbox.

McChrystal has been in the job for over a year and he already knows that his over-publisised strategy of "troops surge" is on the brink of collapse.

I think the general plays a tactical game with Obama.Was he to resign he would admit failure and his army career would certainly and reputation will be over.

Were he to be sacked he would've been seen as the sacrificial lamb on the altar of the Afgan war and he could present himself as the fallen hero.

Well he could've present himeself as the fallen hero if he had the courage to tell
Obama the unpleasant realities of the Afgan war instead of urging him to send more troops.This war is simply unwinnable and thats the stark reality.
