"WAZ said in previous announcements this week that it would exit the Serbian market after facing “great difficulties and public slander”.

Serbian officials, notably Culture and Information Minister Nebojša Bradić, commented on the situation on Thursday by saying that the German media group was leaving for “purely economic reasons”."

The second is the result of the first one. Public slander results in bad publicity and lower sales, which, in the end, cause "economic reasons".

I think WAZ's comment that Serbia needs to "improve conditions for investment" should be heeded. Talk to any Serb, they will readily tell you about constant corruption and inefficiencies. These are some of the bigger reasons why Serbia has a horrendous time attracting international investment. I believe Tadic is sincerely trying to go after this. But the forces against him are "indecently wealthy" or have their heads deep in the food bucket.

Corporations have many options of where to place their money. It is the responsibility of a country to reassure them that conditions are favorable. Would anyone put their money in a bank that seemed like they could not get it out?

WAZ even left the door open for dialogue. The economic situation has been bad for over a year. I am sure that plays into their decision, but isn't the overriding factor. Will Serbia mature from comments like these or be in denial? Do most government officials even care?
