I wonder if Greece and Spain would share that view? Serbia should make their application when it suits her not when all the EU member states deem it appropriate. Serbia should also not be in such a hurry to become a member. UK is a member and, as a UK resident, I have yet to feel the positive effect of membership although we, the uk taxpayers, have managed to pay a huge sum of money to the EU in the way of subsidies, much of which is claimed by private companies who get subsidised to export substandard goods such as dairy products to third world and emerging economies. Serbia, follow the lead of other more intelligent countries who align themselves with the EU member states by way of partnerships rather than becoming fully paid up members of the Union.

"What the heck are you talking about? First of all if the Serbs vote in a referendum to join then so be it. Second you make it sound like Serbs don't want to join. You are forgetting that 3 EU nations currently don't want Serbia to join so what we want is irrelevant. Thirdly Switzerland and Norway are not EU members and still amongst the most powerful in Europe. "...
(Mikael C, 16 June 2010 19:22)

First of all, no country has even been "forced" to join this oh so horrible European Union. Most have been eager, willing and happy to join. And of course, the countries decide on their own, may it be through a referendum (I would prefer that), or their elected governments decide - and not some extremist minority.

Second: You don't really want to compare Serbia with Switzerland or Norway, some of the most wealthiest countries in Europe? They are wealthy on their own (Norway, for example, because of their oil resources) and wouldn't gain much when joining the EU.

Btw, I just read today that Estonia will join the Euro currency zone in 2011. Must be really an extremely stupid government who chose to get the doomed and worthless Euro currency ;-)

If the EU is such a paradise then why does it not improve the living standards of Kosovo residents? Or for that matter why has the living conditions not improved in the eastern European countries that are currently so called members of the EU? For your information they are all on the verge of financial breakdown – Hungary is only the first.

There is absolutely no benefit in Serbia joining the EU except in the concept created in Serbian minds by the EU – it’s all a pipedream and nothing else. The Serbian people can only achieve success through work and not through handouts. There is no easy way other than hard work. That is how you achieve wealth and success.

The SAA will be signed before the end of this year no questions asked. If you recall Albanians were stating late last year that “it could never occur until Mladic is caught and Kosovo is recognised” – well those conditions have been ditched.

Thank you Belgium, Holland, Germany! Please, do us a favor and kick us out of that stupid EU. I am sure, that dude my son did see in the lake Balaton was Ratko Mladic.

I am a Serbian and I've spent most of my life out of Serbia and in the West but I now live in Belgrade and spend most of my time in Serbia. What can I say? Serbia is a wonderful country and I just hate seeing so many Serbians putting their hopes into something that just won't eventuate. Quite simply, if they put the effort into themselves they wouldn't need to focus on false dreams.

Anyone wanting to catch up in Belgrade please let me know. zorank@email.com.

Just look these Serbian diaspora internet warriors, most of them with evil, evil passports from the Wests and cheering that Serbia will not join the EU. Well, when Serbia doesn't join the EU, it will stay behind all EU countries, even the poorest once.

To all Serbians, if you want the agonizing and economic hell, listen to your fascistic parties or those internet Serbian diaspora warriors. "Kosovo je Srbija" will make sure that your children will continue to live in this economic and social pariah state called Serbia, with no future, hope and definitely no chance of gaining Kosovo back. You chooce to stay out, then you lose everything.

More good news for Serbia. Now we have 3 states opposing membership.

Everyone who is putting their hopes into this EU membership dream must be so dissapointed! So so many delays! :)

Hardly surprising. Those 3 countries were always quite frank in their statements and it was sometimes unbelieving how shamelessly the Serbia leadership along with the Serbian media were trying to ignore that.

There is only 2 options: Fulfill the criteria or withdraw. There is no middle way. If you take option B, you will make a lot of Middle- and North Europeans very happy, just in case you want to "threat" us not to join. We will not feel bad about this, ... not even a bit.

I guess that really means 2 states since Belgium is dissolving by the minute. However I wish it were more states sharing this view. Serbia should take the approach of Norway and Switzlerand.. partnership without membership. If they don't like that we are not dying to be a bannana of their empire then that's fine too.

Aleks

pre 13 godina

Strange days indeed. Recently Holland increasingly votes for islamophobes, Belgium votes increasingly for its own dissolution (those nice tolerant flems!), and the Germans... well we know what the Germans want.

Serbia does not need to rush in to the EU, especially as it has proven itself to be rotten by accepting rotten apples and refusing to implement its own rules.

It is better to wait a little while (though still working on harmonizations) while Brussels sorts itself out and by then the Lisbon Treaty will be in force, i.e. Enlargement becomes qualified majority voting - no more national vetos!

We can always hope you are right. No Serbia in the EU means that there will be no more pressure on Serbia to recognize Kosovo.
