This article fails to inform that Bekim shortly before had suffered a stroke that left him half paralysed which was the most likely the reason for his suicide and he also made a letter apologising to his family.

You can all stop now painting the devil on the wall with your disgusting racist comments against a people that suffered at least 4 ethnical cleansings in Kosovo (the first 2 being made as a result of colonisation first by the Ottoman slavers during the Muslim enslavement & forced conversions of Balkans and later by the Nazis who wanted to help create a greater Albania, and then 2 ethnic cleansings before and after Balkan War 3, so there you have your reasons why Serbs are no longer majority in Kosovo) & were bombed after Albanians made the legendary Racak fraud, a "massacre" which later turned out to be an inscenation by KLA, their "Jerusalem" stolen, and still after all those spats in the face they treated decent Albanians better than i have ever seen Albanians treat the Serbs that live around here.

Sincerely, Ilim Gashir, Kosovo Albanian

I find it sad that people are making political points here.

Bekim made it clear throughout his life that he was interested in persuing the arts and wasn't interested in nationalism or point scoring.

So why are a small minority of people here insisting on turing his death into a political issue.

I can only feel and believe that Bekim would agree with me, that the same type of thinking that upset him in his life is appearing here now. Now when he should be left in peace.

Just leave him alone or honour his memory will you? Better not to say anything at all if you can't respect the dead.

Too right Mikael. Here is Roberto eluding that anti Albanian propaganda drove him to suicide and yet here he was living in Belgrade. The very country we should believe drove him to suicide and yet he chose to stay there.
I am really sick of all the rubbish some people write. He had his free "Kosova" to go to. He could've chosen to go back to Sarajevo but he didn't. I wonder why. Things couldnt've been so bad for the Albanians of Serbia then.

Peggy,
First of all let me join you in honoring one of the best actors of Europe. His death is a great loss for all of us.
What we can do as ordinary people at least for this article is to refrain from using words of hate and sarcasm.

His son put it really beautifully:

"The breakup of Yugoslavia, the horrible fratricidal war, the destruction of Vukovar, the bombing of Dubrovnik, the long-running siege of Sarajevo, the war in Kosovo, the bombing of FR Yugoslavia have made my father withdraw even more. He gave up the words which are the strongest and most beautiful means for an actor. He gave them up and turned them into silence – into protest."

There you have it. This is a tragedy of war, not a victim of one side or another.

RIP and all condolences to his family and friends. What a tragic end.

Small correction. The story sounds nice but Yugoslavia was never behindn the "iron curtain".

That is the reason this actor could become known in the West until the Gorbachev era.

YU citizens could travel and work in the West during the Cold War.

I am amazed how he was able to succeeded amidst obvious prejudice. Kudos to him for that.

Curious to know how his sons feel about their mixed ethnic background. Also, like to know about their names. What kind of names are those? Greek???

========================

Even stop to think that perhaps he did not experience any prejudice? Maybe if he did he would've done something about it like move to a place where there is NO prejudice like "Kosova".

Children of mixed marriages don't necessarily hate either side and stick with people who feel the same way. Maybe the mother's side get along very well with them and used to get along with their father as well.
There are mixed religions and ethnicities in my family but we treat each other according to our deeds and how we feel about one another as members of the same family not which side of the fence we came from.

RIP to bekim fehmiu.

i read his obit earlier on Balkan Insight, didn't realize that he was albanian (can you imagine, not cluing in immediately to ethnicity, on THis site?!)

sad story, for the world to have lost such talent, but perhaps sometimes silence is the only appropriate response to such unending horrors.

it is also troubling that once again there is skirmishing (here) over ethnicity -- there shouldn't be. however -- when some of you quoted the obit (which was well written this time, i believe) you forgot that line: "the anti-albanian propaganda..."

that was and is a bitter reality for most ethnic albanians in the former eu, and it continues to this day, as if we need to point that out, on a regular and unapologetic basis. talk about sad.

so when certain members of a despised and oppressed minority (as ethnic albanians have been in YU and continue to be in various successor countries of former yu) insist upon reminding us about this unending prejudice and its various ugly manifestations, they should not be condemned.

not too long ago we lost lena horne, a remarkable actress who was african american and a trail blazer in her own right. as well as too-often victim of our american racism. this was all frequently sited in her obits, with little controversy. like bekim, she also achieved great success, earned it, but was forced to confront prejudice all along. and in her case, did not choose silence.

best wishes to the family and hope to see one of bekim's films soon. i thought he resembled a young peter o'toole, though w/ darker coloring.

also would like to read his memoirs, if in english.

thanks.

Authorities have to let forensics do their job and find out if he really commited suicide. I'm not talking about serb forensics but about an independent invastigation from another country. All ex-yugoslavs(except serbs) have a very good reason not to believe what belgrade says. He never agreed with serbia attacking neighbouring countries during the 90s'.

Their views are sick and distorted, and only create more hatred and nothing towards peace and reconciliation. PRN - Please get over yourself and give this wonderful man the respect that he deserves. He was a great actor and one of the most beautiful men on the screen.

Poor guy was obviously pulled apart from all sides, when he was a normal, thinking person who just happened to cross the boundaries between ethnic groups (as many good people do).

"Veteran actor commits suicide"

Suicide??!!

Serbs killed hundreds ALbanian army recruits in the 1980s, returned in coffins and reported that they committed suicide.

Serbian word/promise/judgment is worthless not only for Albanians but also for the rest of balkna neighbours.

Methinks you need conselling. To hijack an obituary is appalling and highlights the delusional fantasy world that you inhabit.

His son put it really beautifully:

I am amazed how he was able to succeeded amidst obvious prejudice. Kudos to him for that.

Curious to know how his sons feel about their mixed ethnic background. Also, like to know about their names. What kind of names are those? Greek???

PRN, take a chill pill.

========================

RIP Bekim. It pains me to think that you took your own life and the possiblity that nobody noticed you were suffering somehow.

Your place among the greatest in Jugoslav / world cinema is assured.

Rest assured that many of us will protect your name and honour your memory.

Why all this anger towards PRN it's all true what he said in his comment about the army recruits but I think this was not the place to say that and I think Bekim Femiu did commit suicide.

It's always sad to see someone take their own life, but Bekim certainly lived his life to the fullest & left behind a rich legacy. I am amazed how he was able to succeeded amidst obvious prejudice. Kudos to him for that.

A lot of people didn't agree what happend in the 90s even Serbs. Why did he live in Belgrade almost all his life? After Kosovos so called independence he still stayed in Belgrade. I wonder why?
(Mikael C, 16 June 2010 23:03)

Dude, did you know that once belgrade was the capital of yugo?. I believe that Bekim Fehmiu was married to a serbian actress and he created a family there so...!

A very sad ending for a great actor, my thoughts are with his family. I hope that they can recover from this tragic incident.

And PRN and Robert, please stop your Trolling in at least this thread, show some respect for the dead.

For all Albanians, who suffered so much during Yugoslavia... this man's success and assimilation into the city of those who persecuted us is a spit in our face.

What a truly vile comment, particularly under these circumstances.

Do as I do, and just pass on the comments from the resident hate mongers on this news site. I do not read comments from certain names. Their views are sick and distorted, and only create more hatred and nothing towards peace and reconciliation. I did not know this actor, I grew up in the west, but my condolences go out to his family, as he appears to have been a good man, that was sickened by the violence from all sides.

PRN, please don't turn this to another Albanians VS Serbs. At this is time we have no reason to believe anything else than what the police are citing is the reason of his death. The comment you made is very inappropriate.

Very sad news. Another great Yugoslav has gone.

I saw some of his movies in the 1970s, such as 'Specijalno vaspitanje' and 'The Adventurers', based on the Harold Robbins novel.

Small correction. The story sounds nice but Yugoslavia was never behindn the "iron curtain".

That is the reason this actor could become known in the West until the Gorbachev era.

YU citizens could travel and work in the West during the Cold War.

RIP though.

(Peggy, 17 June 2010 03:51)

Peggy,
First of all let me join you in honoring one of the best actors of Europe. His death is a great loss for all of us.
What we can do as ordinary people at least for this article is to refrain from using words of hate and sarcasm.
