The report says the team of American geologists used charts and information gathered by Soviet mining experts during the Soviet Union's occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s.

So from these charts made in the 80s the American Geologists predict a trillions worth of minerals? Sounds like it's a part of the exit strategy for Afghanistan.

If there truly were such mineral wealth, you can expect great exploitation by the West while the locals fight a civil war for the remaining crumbs. That's standard Western policy.

"Uh oh, more bad news for the Afghan people. Now the foreign occupiers will not leave until they have squeezed every penny out of those mines.
(kufr, 15 June 2010 11:12)"

Agreed. The US refused to get out of Iraq because of its oil. They will definitely also wanna milk the Afghans dry of their minerals first before they think about quitting.

"U.S. and Afghan officials say that large gold deposits are located in southern Afghanistan known as strongholds of Taliban insurgents. "

This paragraph in the report looks mighty fishy to me. You mean to tell me that the Yankees and Kabul managed to send people into the midst of hostile territory for any extended period of time and the Talaban actually allowed them to do all their propecting work in absolute peace without any incident?

Oh good, they have found minerals in Afghanistan. Well US you’re welcome to them if you can dig it up without losing any more troops – enjoy your new found wealth. I wish they could keep the US longer in that country but alas even this wealth will not stop it from cutting and running; only, of course, after declaring the forces of democracy have won the war.
By the way it was Soviet geologists (Russian) that found this mineral wealth. The Americans came across this information in the Afghan geological Institute where they located satellite and aerial maps, geological samples, but why spoil the story with the truth.
