I just returned and crossed that border several time. The good news are that Ukrianians (like Russians in the past) did clean up the border a lot. Putting $20 bills is probably the worst you can do.

What Szemi writes is correct, save $20 and possible trouble, go when the timing is right.

Ukraina is of lesser benefit now than EU because Ukrainian money is tied to Dollar, not Euro.

Still very good and cheap - the gas prices are like in California.

"I think you will not need those bucks in the passport.During the last year I have crossed that border for 2 times and the maximum waiting time was no more than half an hour in both directions.Try to avoid perids of public holidays in the UKraine. At those times the cross-border trafic doubles.Anyway allegadly early afternoons are the best periods for crossing that border ."

Thank you for the advise. I appreciate it.

They hated the waiting at the border, 3 1/2 hours. I will put a 20 dollar bill into my American passport, according to Irina my colleague that will spead up thinks. As I heard they are not histile to the dollar at all.

"Will go to Liedl again, they have not just the tasty red Baywood Ruby Cabernet but also rose wines from California. Cost much less in Forint than in the States if I pay in Dollar - and all my Forint is converted from "green".

Every time I fill up my cart with American produce being now (much) cheaper in Hungary than in America I am thinking about you and about terrific "benefits" of European Union.

I think I will have the same great filling sometime in September-October during my planned visit to Hungary.
With California and other foreign fines I had the same experience last time. Very cheap prices...much cheaper than in the US. First I thought maybe something is wrong. At my surprise those wines were really excellent!!
I like the European Union this way!!!
If I can covinc few relatives to drive me thereI will also make a very short trip to Karpatalja (Zakarpatske region in the Ukraine). Some relatives just came back from their bus trip. Long live the European Union!
(Mircea, 11 June 2010 10:57)

I am afraid, Mircea today they will speak not about European Union but about me.

"Why this guy is so happy driving around Hungary and Serbia with bunch of Dollars - while our Euro-centric currencies are in the toilet?"

I think that Serbia will begin accession negotiations with the EU in 2013.

Serbia will need 7 years to finish the accession negotiations which means that Serbia will join the EU in 2020.

Long live the European Union!
