If you were ever to come across Gazela bridge you just might understand why these people have been moved. Not to mantion the lack of hygene and desease just waiting to thrive. Many have already benefited from alternative acccommodation but once one lot go the other come. This is not a question of human rights or discremination. With slump in economy world wide there is a large unemployment amongst the working population in general. Lets be just a little bit more realistic before jumping to conclusions.

Its good that Djilas is being held to account by both AI and the Belgrade media reporting on the issue.

Of course one must have the understanding that Serbia is not a rich country that can afford to pay for good housing for its citizens (roma and non roma alike). However, its not good enough to excuse the lack of alternative accomodation by saying that gypsies had forknowledge of the fact they would be forced to move.

I must say that Djilas reminds me very much of some American mayor with his attitude. He probably models himself on it, using modern language, appealing to modern attitudes and the middle classes.

However, I find that attitude distasteful in the US, UK or wherever else. If you have an underclass you must take measures to improve their position in society - not to justify doing nothing by referring to the needs of the middle class.

Of course if he tried to bring this attitude to the wider country, he would hardly last 5 minutes.
