"China and Russia did give in, Ian is correct, these are the most crippling sanctions Tehran has faced, and it hasn't violated international law even remotely (not to say I loike the regime but that is irrelevant - there's a lot of regimes I may not like). Moscow and Beijing are all talk total opportunists. The great irony that these sanctions are imposed on Iran in the same week as Israel has - yet again for the 100,000the time - blasted all semblance of international law to bits with its murderous attack on the Gaza peace convoy, shooting Turkish civilians in the head some 30 times, yet there are no sanctions on Israel. Also, as Ian says "why shouldn't Iran be allowed nuclear power but the US, UK, Russia, China, France, Pakistan, India, Germany, Brazil, Turkey etc is? Seems like double standards to me!", yeh and Ian forgot to mention Israel which has 100's of nuclear bombs which it developed together with its apartheid cousin South Africa, yet again, no sanctions for that, and Iran is only developing nuclear power, not weapons.

How can you call these "crippling sanctions" a la Mdm Clinton when, for example, they largely spared Iran's oil and energy sector because the Chinese need these products? What's the point of sanctions in the other areas (except to save Obama's face before his electorate) when most of Iran's revenue derives from the very energy and petroleum sectors that emerged practically unscathed by these sanctions?

At the moment Tehran may publicly rail at Beijing for not vetoing. But I suspect that is for public consumption only. Behind the scenes both China and Iran must have already discussed what could or could not pass muster at the UNSC, and are both secretly relieved at the range of sanctions that was finally passed at the UN. And Beijing will probably secretly compensate Tehran in some ways eg. guaranteed purchase of its oil, financial aid from its huge reserves, maybe even clandestine transfer of military and nuclear technology -- who knows? And when the time is ripe, both will kiss and make-up. I'm sure the US is aware of what is going on, but what can it do?

"China and Russia gave into Western demands again. Such a shame. The UK and the US have hated Iran ever since their Iran Revolution because we no longer have influence and access to their oil. This is just the latest way of punishing Iran. Also why shouldn't Iran be allowed nuclear power but the US, UK, Russia, China, France, Pakistan, India, Germany, Brazil, Turkey etc is? Seems like double standards to me!

The Chinese and Russians didn't give in. The measures passed were a far cry from the "crippling sanctions" vowed by Madam Clinton last year. If anything, it was the West who blinked in order to get China's and Russia's acquiescence.

And oh, do you know that China has just announced that the Iranian President will be in Beijing on June 11th? So much for the West's theory about Iran's growing isolation!

To be fair, we also hate them because it's a foul Islamist regime and supports Islamic militancy in Europe, BiH for example. The mistake was made a long time ago, when we supported the Shah's coup against Mossadegh: we can repent that one at leisure.
