I suspect the EU will likely to have disintegrated by the time most of the Balkans are deemed ready for memberhship.

It is possible the EU will survive as a union -- albeit as an empty shell. Members will put up obstacles against other members (in financial matters, people movements across borders, even imports, etc) so that in reality the EU will no longer be a real union but on paper only. Do you honestly expect the Germans, for instance, to relish the thought of bailing out other members indefinitely? Will any German government survive its next election if it did? As for the thought of having, in addition, to help new Balkan members financially -- anyone can see what a no brainer the concept EU enlargement is!
