Sounds like a case of child abuse here.

Strict parent can easily interpret as an abusive parent.

Why on earth would a court place a child in custody of an abusive parent?

Why didn't the mother get custody? Is it normal for fathers to gain custody in Serbia?
A tragic situation for sure.

In East/Cenral Europe parental abuse is a common situation. Many parents still know only one mean of parenting: violent corporal punishment. It is the worst idea - and we were guilty, too (luckily only very few times) losing the patience. But it's common and in the county much more than in capitals.

Courts are totally oblivious to the problem and in many cases police, too.

Compared with how it was earlier I do see a good improvement. In our street there is a house where they (two adults, brother and sister) regularly fight and the police is not so shy anymore - they did take the guy a few times and he was booked into jail for a few days.

These two both have a strong alcohol problem, too - wonder, maybe that was the root cause of the problem in Takovo as well.
