"Serbia has yet to refuse a single dollar that the EU offered to it and i'm sure the same is true with NATO"

Neither the EU nor NATO has paid reparations for the damage they caused on the sovereign state of Serbia in the year of 1999.

Note: Besides, 'handouts'? They're 'loans'. 'Loans' have to be 'paid back' with 'interest'.

Serbia is an economy in transition - Serbia only became independent on June 5 2006, it's now 2010 making that roughly 4 years of independence - essentially making it impossible for Serbia to become stable without some financial assistance.

There are too many outstanding issues in Serbia that need reprimanding because the state has also inherited a huge Yugoslavian debt back log.

That being said, Serbia is doing a remarkable job given it's position. Serbia may be in some financial trouble, but she has her reasons.

Question is: what reasons does the west have for it's current financial troubles?

I think that we are going to be in an 'agree to differ' status for the foreseeable future.

I don't know whether it makes much sense for Serbia to join NATO while there is still a dispute over Kosovo.

I have little sympathy with those who accuse NATO because of the intervention. NATO had cause - there could be no repeat of the murders in Bosnia. Basically Milosevic showed little conscience about the victims of conflict and messed up politically because of it.

On the other hand, I have little sympathy for NATO for supporting this stupid udi. There is no need for a new country carved out of Serbia's lands. The best route forward would be for NATO countries to readdress the Kosovo issue.

As for posters who look to Russia - forget it. The relationship with Russia will always be friendly, but a bit distant. Serbia needs relationship with its near neighbours.

It is easy to resent NATO because of the bombing, but that will need to be forgotten. Germany was bombed by everyone, yet is now at the heart of Europe.

However, it is not acceptable for Serbian politicians to join NATO while resentment festers. If NATO is to defend Serbia, it needs to be required to defend Serbia with Kosovo as part of its territory.

Serbia's economy is in free-fall and it's taking loans and hand-outs left and right let us please not talk about how Serbia doesn't need the EU and its structural development funds. Serbia has yet to refuse a single dollar that the EU offered to it and i'm sure the same is true with NATO. Myth and heroic folklore will not help ordinary Serbians live better lives in fact it will do the exact opposite. One only has to look to the countries in the Middle East to realize that living in a fantasy world does not bring about progress and prosperity. Serbia has to turn to the West and make a conscious decision to become a stable, democratic, and free-market economy. Joining NATO and the EU (after completing all the required prerequisites) are the best decisions that Serbians can make for their own future.

If Serbia joins the EU, the country will have no future. EU is a political organisation developed by the western finance, for the western finance and nothing else. Bye bye freedom, religion and tradition. And let's not forget other people's economic crisis that you will end up paying for. That the EU.

This is Romania, 3 years after.

Nato, will mostly sell you all their obsolete equipment at exorbenant prices, soon to be surrounded by Nato is as good as being in Nato and really their is no point even without getting into history.

Skeptisism about EU is growing, particully from neigbours Romania and Bulgaria and crippling obstacles Serbia will be put through to join the Eu. Lately there is noise about Germans seeking compensation for territory lost in Slavonia and Vojvodina after WW2. This for Serbia can amount to several billions of Euros. The recent Lisbon treaty exempted Czechs, Poles and Slovaks from any ramifications in exchange for their signitures, but where does it leave the Serbs and even Croats who aspire to join?
Perhaps it could be more advantageous for Serbia to seek a path of signing as many free trade agreements as possible, and as such be attractive to major EU companies and make Serbia the Industry hub of Europe, not having to deal with an overly regulated system, cheaper labour costs, free trade to Russia and the emerging Eastern markets could be a better recipe both. Works for the Swiss.

Zoran, no I don't know who funds LDP. Who funds them?

The LDP does have some reformist policies, that can't be disputed. But support of important issues such as neo-liberalism, NATO etc, among other things makes sceptical.

Do you truly believe that Tadic is going to lose the next election?

I was never in favor of Serbia joining NATO and guardedly optimistic about Serbia joining the EU.

I still hold Serbia's place is anywhere but NATO, and now with the eurozone seemingly on the verge of collapse, I can't help consider Serbia's options outside the EU as being far better.

Rassmussen really shouldn't be selling two highly unpopular products to a potentual buyer in this horrible market.

In the first place, the EU and Nato are not "international organizations", at least not of members who are equals.

The EU is a neo-colonial empire ruled by by Germany, UK and France. Nato is warmongering millitary bloc ruled by the US which expects its lackeys inside to fight its wars of agression for it.

Both "organizations" are now coming loose at the seams from imperial overstretch.

'Is there any other reason to why NATO wants to expand?'

Hank, using our soldiers for cannon fodder instead of using their own, is just one reason they would love to have Serbia on board. There are many others, and none of them good.
Once a country joins NATO, they are forced to 'upgrade' their military to NATO standards. This means you have to buy very expensive military equipment from the US, UK....from the 'rich' West, to keep them rich - equipment that you don't need and can't afford. It doesn't matter if you don't have any money, they will arrange to give you loans so you can buy their equipment, which means you go further into debt to help keep the colonialists rich and profitable. It also means, since you are now indebted to them in a huge financial way, that they have you in their pocket and can tell you what to do, control all your decisions, pull your strings. It is completely immoral what NATO does, but these are people with no principles and completely devoid of any humanity. They are only worried about profits and keeping up their fat cat standard of living, and you are just a lemon they can squeeze and get every drop out of, and once the last drop is done they will discard you.
Another reason they want you in their club is because they need somewhere to dump their contaminated waste, they need somewhere to train and play their war games and pollute the environment - because they don't dare do these things in their own back yards. Why would they, when they can do it in Bulgario or Romania or or some other lackie country. They also need somewhere to build their missile shield to defend against a non-existent threat and start a new cold war with Russia so that the military industry keeps the profits coming.
The fact that many countries join this organization and spend money on this useless equipment which is supposed to guard them against some outside threat (which is non existent), instead of spending on hospitals, schools, and infrastructure, just goes to show how immoral and stupid some of these eastern European governments are. I am very glad that Serbia will never, ever joins this criminal and complety psychopathic organization which serves no positive purpose for humanity.

Euro-Atlantic integration has brought nothing of long-term benefits to anyone but the political elite, the peoples of each member nation are poorer in both financial and moral terms. Serbia would meet its doom there, as has all their member states have clearly demonstrated.

That is Serbia's decision and all surveys suggest that Serbian citizens don't want anything to do with NATO.

I have always thought that statements like this whether by NATO officials or members of Cedomir Jovanovic's party don't serve any purpose whatever.

One other thing, every time somebody from LDP says 'lets join NATO' there is a huge groan from the NGO sector which is split down the middle on the issue.

Such a fact makes me wonder whether LDP is serving the interests of the reformist block in Serbia or serving outside interests...

Will I be glad when Tadic and his sell-outs lose the next election. Serbia joining NATO would mean Serbia in conflict with Russia and the loss of Kosovo. We have an eagle with two heads on our flag, one facing East and the other West. If we learn too far to either side we find ourselves in conflict with the other. We need to remain neutral until the geopolitical situation shifts and now it is shifting east and not west. The sooner NATO leaves Serbian territory the better.

Denmark has been critisized for its paritcipation in Irak and Afganistan. For such a small country there has been a substancial number of dead danish soilders and voices are raised to pull them back from the battlefields. It would be perfect if Serbia too would join NATO and relieve soilders from Western Europe. That way Serbs, Croats, Albanians, Macedonians etc can die for the American cause and not just Western Europeans who's lives are more precious. The aid the Western Balkans receive should meen that they send their sons to die for american oil. Is there any other reason to why NATO wants to expand?
Any independent and proud nation should say no to NATO.

Euro-Atlantic integration has brought nothing of long-term benefits to anyone but the political elite, the peoples of each member nation are poorer in both financial and moral terms. Serbia would meet its doom there, as has all their member states have clearly demonstrated.

Such a fact makes me wonder whether LDP is serving the interests of the reformist block in Serbia or serving outside interests...

You mean you truly don't know? You only need to know who funds the LDP for all to be clear. They are certainly not a reformist block.

Serbia should join NATO right after Russia does.Serbia should join EU only without compromising its territorial integrity.Serbians must understand by join EU will not solve their economic problems.Becoming EU member is not a PANACEA,however,it could be very beneficial to the State by properly using available resources.
