The pipelines were never designed to pass through Kosovo but Camp Bondsteel and several others in that region were designed to “protect” the Nabucco pipeline, plus other interests. There is no need to have a military camp next to the pipeline itself but sufficiently close would have been good enough.
South stream is Russian and Camp Bondsteel would have been a threat until the Russians moved into the City of Nis.
South stream is a reality but Nabucco has not left the planning desk and it looks like it never will considering the current financial crises in the US and EU.

"You see it was supposed to have a dual purpose; first to have a series of bases to intimidate the peoples of the Balkans and Middle East and the other was to ensure that its oil and gas pipeline from Turkey to Europe was secure. There will be no oil or gas pipeline from Turkey so what is the point of the base?
(sj, 21 May 2010 07:47)"

No, there are currently even two oil pipelines planned: South Stream and Nabucco. Though none of them will go through Kosovo.

I wonder who came up with all these nonsense rumours connecting oil pipelines and Kosovo. Certain people must have been desperately seeking for some alleged reasons, might they be as absurd as those above. The reasons for the new pipeline routes is to bypass unsafe transit countries (like Ukraine). Enlighten me: Who would ever be that stupid to plan a pipeline passing through a "country" like Kosovo?

"KFOR already reduced its troops to 10,000. Cutting this number in half would be an opportunity for Kosovo Police and FSK to step up.

This just shows you that the Declaration of Independence (DOI 2008) brought regional stability.
(RKS, 20 May 2010 17:26)"

You mean Kosovo Albanians are now happy about their "independence", are busy counting the states who recognized them and don't have time any more for violent riots and looting... oops, sorry.. I meant "time for peaceful protesting and defending themselves against Serbian monks?"

Get real! Who is going to pay for this so called “Kosova Security Force”? Europe? I know that the EU appears stupid but even they are not that stupid enough to allow the Albanians to arm themselves. But who is going to pay that “Force”, last time I looked more people like to get paid for work and that helps in putting food on the table.
“Anyone who has actually been on Bondsteel could tell it was not built as a permanent entity. There was a huge controversy over whether to pave the roads inside the compound.
(pss, 20 May 2010 20:59)
If the US only attacked Serbia because of their humanitarian concerns of Albanians then why has it not developed Kosovo. Until recently the US had plenty of money to bring all infrastructure up to date in Kosovo. Then explain to me why has it not spent a penny with the exception on security and paying for a compliant so called Kosovo government?

“There was a huge controversy over whether to pave the roads inside the compound.”
The reason for the debate was that the US has lost the energy war and what is the point of maintaining a permanent structure when they will have to pack up and leave anyway. You see it was supposed to have a dual purpose; first to have a series of bases to intimidate the peoples of the Balkans and Middle East and the other was to ensure that its oil and gas pipeline from Turkey to Europe was secure. Oh, wasn't it common knowledge so far amongst the Serbs here that NATO and the USA 'invaded' Kosovo to create and keep a huge military base there, and for bulding 'oil pipelines', for exploiting the billion tons of natural resources, and so on and so on?

How come that you are not surprised that NATO/KFOR troups will be further reduced?
(Top, 20 May 2010 16:19)
I have had to laugh everytime I read a comment about the huge mega base Bondsteel and IT was the whole reason for the US involvement.
Anyone who has actually been on Bondsteel could tell it was not built as a permanent entity. There was a huge controversy over whether to pave the roads inside the compound.
Personally, I think it should and hope it will become a permanent base.

I'm sure that the KSF would be able to stop an invasion if it didn't happen on a Sunday since no buses would be able to take them to their bases. Or as long as the invasion didn't happen before 1000 or after 1700 hours because they all off at that time. I'm glad to hear about the reduction in forces. It means that soon the locally hired workforce on Bondsteel will stop wasting my tax money by taking coffee breaks for four of the eight hours they are supposed to be working.

If you have worked in Kosova recently, it should be obvious that the Albanians are now more than adequately trained to replace Kfor. In addition, they have an overabundant supply of qualified young men to handle any situation including an invasion by Serbia.

It would be logical if he did. Nato needs canonfodder in Afghanistan and Iraq, they don't have any use for soldiers having fat salaries while doing nothing exept frequenting the brothels and bars in Kosovo owned by the fat cats in Pristina
