Ian wonders : “why is the Crimea such an important spot for them?”

1/ You don’t know how many times our ancestors have poured their blood to this land in the 18-th century and during WW1 (1856) and WW3 (1941-45).
2| Our people inhabiting the peninsula hate being included to the Ukraine which is seen on their flag.
3| Sevastopol is the best place to control the whole of the Black Sea and there is not a single document that the city has been given to the Ukraine as even during the USSR it had always been under direct rule of Moscow but not the Ukraine.
4| Sevastopol is the best place to guard the South Stream and to oppress Georgia and to shield Sochi where our leaders like to swim and ski.
5| And finally because it is OUR land stolen during bacchanalia times

Hey Ian,
go close all your (nato) bases outside USA/UK and come back to ask the same question.

PS
Why did you (nato) go to Bondsteel? because ? the people wanted it?
(Pyrros, 27 April 2010 16:19)

I'd love to see the UK close all Military bases outside of British territories. I'd love it for the UK to leave NATO too. It is just the US's way of controlling European military, even though NATO was a UK invention. Plus I'd love to see the US close it's bases abroad too, especially the ones in North Yorkshire. Bondsteel can be closed for all I care. It aint needed any more. The Kosovo Security Force can guard Kosovo with EULEX. Yet again I'm pretty sure that the people of Kosovo appreciate Bondsteel's existence.

Opposition lawmakers hurled eggs and smoke bombs inside the chamber as the law was narrowly passed on the 25-year extension to the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s base in Crimea.

Eggs and smoke bombs? Sore losers! Ukraine is now firmly in Russia's hands and the time to expand that westwards is nearing.

Obviously the people don't support the presence of the Russian Navy. Moscow's puppet is obviously doing rather well for his master Big Vlad.

What I don't get is, why does Russia need it's navy based in the Ukraine? Russia already has territory bordering the Black Sea, why is the Crimea such an important spot for them? Is it because they want to be closer to NATO countries?

Ian, is not that hard to understand.
In the last twenty yrs they could have built 5 ports for the fleet on the russian shore if they really wanted to.
Russians consider Crimeea as russian, accidently for the time being belonging to Ukraine. The fleet there just assures them that they're actually in full control of Sevastopol and the russians in the area have an arm with a gun available if someone would challange their domination over the area. Right now they're planning to build a bridge from Crimeea to Russia proper, so no need of passing through inland Ukraine to get to Crimeea in the future.
