EULEX says that the trial of Albin Kurti, which had been delayed eight times, shows weaknesses which had to be removed from the Kosovo judiciary.

First off, I would like to point out Vetevendosje a group created by Albin Kurti, appears radical, but there are several interesting points many people are not focusing on.
1) this group is not focusing on improving Kosovo for just Kosovar Albanians, but Kosovars in general. Mr. Kurti unlike many former KLA leaders recognizes what really occurred during the war.
2) Mr. Kurti refuses to show up for a number of reasons one being that if the EULEX claims they are not governing Kosovo, then why are they holding the trial? The EULEX is governing Kosovo
3) Isn't it Serbia who wants less Western involvement especially the U.S. within Kosovo? Many young Kosovars realize Camp BondSteel is not within Kosovo to protect the country, protection from what? It is there because Kosovo and all Former Yugoslav countries are strategically located between the West &East
4) So then aren't Kosovars, just in some ways supporting the push away from the puppet masters (US) of the world?
In all reality Vetevendosje is gaining support and although I know Mr. Kurti enough to say his education is beyond that of many Kosovar leaders today, I also recognize the UN must remain in Kosovo for some time. However, together the focus should be on corruption foremost and educating the youth on not only mathematics & science (which Serbia is very strong at), but history without propaganda to have a new generation which will work to unify Kosovo rather than adapt to the older mentality.

"If Kurti is innocent, then he should show up and prove his case. If he isn't, then he should keep hiding like Mladic."

I agree to the first sentence. But Kurti is not hiding - no need to! He simply feels safe in Kosovo, knowing that the KPS won't do anything against him, fearing public uproar from his supporters.

If you compare it to Mladic, then you must refer to how things have been several years ago, under the former Serbian government lead by Kostunica, when he could freely move around in Belgrade and nobody tried to arrest him.

Bekim,

Why don't you protest against the well known deal that American peace keepers are not prosecuted in case they shoot someone dead? Oh, I see: Americans are your friends, hence the double system.

“The shortcomings have been obvious during the trial unfortunately still show weaknesses which must be eliminated from the domestic institutions of rule of law if Kosovo is to reach European standards,” the EU mission in Kosovo said.

-- Considering a separate article on the indefinite delay in Seselj's trial seems to be indicative of "European standards", I'd say Kosovo-UNMIK's "rule of law" is right on par.

Somehow Bizarre: Kurti and his followers have something in common with the Serbs in Northern Kosovo: Both don't accept Kosovo laws and Kosovo courts :-)

The acceptible term in English in modern Europe is 'Ms' where a woman's marital status is not volunteered/ given. Just thought I'd mention it now that there are so many of us around. (kate)

Thanx Kate, for correcting my typing error. If I was to look at every single word the way is spelled from posters, including b92 editor, then we will be correcting each other all day long, rather than concentrating on topic at hand.

Despite the many articles lately on how undemocratic Kosovo is etc etc albanian commentators continue to say the opposite. And they say Serbs are not being realistic. The north of Kosovo will join the rest of Kosovo once the entire territory of Kosovo is back under Serbian control.

But if he did incite violence then that is a crime which should be answered for, in the same way as the killing of the demonstrators should be fully investigated and answered for.

UNMIK has made sure the Rumanian policeman not only will ever get their day in court but they even got medals for "serving for peace" in Kosova. That is UN for you!

EU and UN should arrest this guy right now. And trial him. Give him a fair trial. But he must accept that it is the UN who is trialing him as it is the UN who is governing Kosovo!

As for comments on this thread that Kurti has not committed a crime, then let him go and present his case. Failing to turn up at court will just aggravate the situation and make a mockery of the 'internationals' (double whammy for Kurti).

Whether you like him or not; agree with him or not; he has been charged with a crime and can't 'petition' himself out of the system.

Personally I think he will get as much support as possible and then enjoy his day in court and use the process as a forum.

Although I may disagree with him, at least Kurti has his own ideas and has not sold out. But if he did incite violence then that is a crime which should be answered for, in the same way as the killing of the demonstrators should be fully investigated and answered for.

Of course this "weakness" is caused by the local authorities, Kosovo judges, lawyers and police officers, and not by EULEX itself.

It was extremely premature to hand over resonsibility to those persons who are not able or willing to do their job properly.

Kurti is avoiding going to trail by collecting signatures from his relatives and his tribe. I guess this is the model for Europe as well. Commit a crime and ask your clan to sign a petition so you won't have to face justice. I guess Kosovo is really taking care of its people, but only if you are albanian. If albanians want to join the civilized world they need to take responsibility: You can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs. Arrest this joker and let him face justice for his crimes.

EULEX spokeswoman Kristiina Herodes said that the main responsibility was with the local judiciary system.

On the contrary Miss/Mrs Herodes. EULEX Police have shown how incompetant they are. KP and Kosova/o judiciary is not looking for Kurti since he has not comitted any crime, but you are looking for him. Kosova/o is not the size of Russia that you can't find one person that is not hiding at all.Why don't you start an investigation against Romanian FPU???

You have plenty of war criminals hiding in north, one of who died the other day and even Albanian criminals taking shelter, yet these "europeans" rather spend their time playing cat and mouse game with Kurti. Why? Well Kurti's men arent armed and wouldnt retalite. You're a joke EULEX, but I guess you guys are used to hear it by now.
