Yeah, like the Pope would visit Serbia. If Benedict XVI is still alive in a few years, he probably would be too old to travel.

Arlene, I don't know where u live but anyone knows that the Pope never dies. One out one in. SPC is talking about inviting the Pope, not Mr. Ratzinger.

The time for reconciliation between east & west has passed. Forget him & forget the Catholic church because both he & it, have lost their way.

The previous Popes have long desired to visit Serbia because it the stumbling block to better relations with the Orthodoxy. The current Pope is keen to try and heal the rift that has existed since the Great Schism and consequent separation of one Church.
This proposed visit has little to do with having a chat with local Catholics, but a diplomatic mission to break the “ice”. If you recall the last Pope visited Greece and that did not go well where to this day the Greek Orthodox Church is still dealing with the huge fallout.
Regardless of who is Pope there is still a desire in Rome to start healing that rift. The Catholic Church is well aware that Serbs want an apology in Belgrade for the horrors committed against them and in that other city that houses the largest number of Serbs outside Serbia – Jasenovac.
All of this is being planned and all will happen – in fact the Pope will end up praying in Jasenovac with the Serbian Patriarch. The Croats will not be very happy, but then they have to look at the bigger picture – do we appease 3.5 million or do we bring closer 350 million Orthodox. I know which one Rome favours.

Unless Ratzinger is planning to apologize for using Catholicism to croatize Serb Catholics and inciting Germany & A-H to humiliate Serbia in WW1, we shouldn't want him walking on Saint Sava's, although I have a feeling that Vatican's stance on KiM despite the Catholic Albanian connection will get him in.
