Do you think that hitting a politician in the street should receive a heavier sentence than rape? Or placing a grenade outside somebodies house? Or of killing somebody by running them over in the street? The list is endless... And yet we are talking about an attack on a politician, as if its so important.
(bganon, 7 April 2010 12:18)

I would hope that rape would get a much harsher punishment than 2 years in prison. Are you trying to compare the two now?
I would hope that all the offenses you listed would attract a much harsher penalty than 2 years.

Since we are talking about this particular case how do you come to a conclusion that politicians are above the law? I was pointing this out to you. Please do explain to me how on this occasion this politician was above the law? You siad it not me.

One life is not more valuable than the other but when it comes to murder or attacks on certain members of our society some offenders do and should get harsher penalties because those members of our society are representing the law and it is deemed as an attack on the law itself as well as the person.

I was hoping that I did not have to spell this out to you, but here you are.

I don't know Ilic nor do I care about his policies but I do care about upholding the law no matter who is involved. If Tadic got hit would you whinge about the length of the sentence? Just curious.

In my country they punish cop killers more harshly than other killers. I presume they would do the same in Serbia.

>>> Common, Zoran...don't add so much importance to Ilić figure by claiming that somebody was sent after him.
It would be much more realistic to guess, and following the fact that Court case did not indicate any connection of that kind, that his unaccountable primitive political and human conduct in the years of his long political involvement does irritate people to extreme levels and has resulted in that irrational act of the man sentenced.

Ilić brings nothing to Serbia apart of divisions and medieval egocentric primitivism.Yesterday he publicly joyed that another man was sentenced?

Dean don't hold your breath, Ilic is not going anywhere, we will have to put up with his ways for many years to come.

Zoran well thats a vote of confidence from you to the current government on this sentence then! Not me though! I think 2 years for this is too much. And judging by the sentence think its fair to say his contributions to DS are miserly or non existent. You are aware that you are contradicting your own argument on this point. If his contribution to the ruling elite is nothing then by your standard he can't be a DS hooligan.

Deja vu of the communism from the worst kind !!!

Dejan Stojadinović somehow received "speedy trial" and politicized sentence.
Taking cases in "speedy procedures" is punishable by the Law, for the kind notice of some of you...and so long for the "independent" justice of Serbia.
Furthermore I can hardly recall that Ilić received any sentence after hitting journalists back in past in few ocassions...or after claiming that "if he had gun he would certainly shut him"...or after suggesting that Serbian PM Đinđić should be killed?
Everything connected with Ilić represent public disgrace for our country and it looks like to me that Serbia is turning into a playground for his advanced psychical unaccountability and unlimited primitivism.
The day when he will be removed from politics and denounced in any sense will be the day that Serbia is moving one big civilized step forward.

Ilić schizophrenically disturbed, evil and primitive comments after Court decision yesterdaay were the one of the greatest insults of my brain from the time of ex-Yu war had started.

Zoran

pre 14 godina

bganon, this probably has more to do with the DS stopping one of their hooligans from embarrassing the party than anything else.

When considering a sentence, there are other factors such as:

Has this person done this before?
Does he have a criminal record?
Is he a known troublemaker?
How much does he contribute to the DS party?
etc, etc....

Repeat offenders and troublemakers tend to get higher sentences, especially if their contribution to the ruling elite is nothing. That's just the world we live in and it's not one I like either.

The life of a public official Peggy is worth no more and no less than anybody else. That is your bias showing, not mine. How do you measure a life anyway in your world? A policemen is worth more than nurse, a firefighter worth more than a coal miner? Perhaps a baker is worth more than a bin collector? Flip a coin.

By saying that politicians are above the law is insulting 'our' intelligence. I'd say that 'we' would have no intelligence at all if 'we' didn't know that politicians are above the law.

I can give you any number of cases in Serbia when politicians have committed crimes and got away with it. And yet if it is a member of the public attacks a politician, they come down on him hard. Its endemic of a deeper problem of a society where the law is applied and exaggerated to protect the ruling class. The rest of us can go spin.

Zoran making an example of somebody is usually another way of causing an injustice to somebody in order that other people see it. In the society I'd like to live in there would be no examples to others - attacking somebody in the street should be punished in the first place. The law should be equally applied, not stretched in one case and unapplied in others.

The only message this is sending to people is that if you try to hit a politician you will be sent down.

Do you think that hitting a politician in the street should receive a heavier sentence than rape? Or placing a grenade outside somebodies house? This is not about a politician committing a crime but a hooligan and we need to send a clear message that it is not acceptable. You are implying that if he beat up a normal citizen he would probably get away with it but not with a politician. You imply, why should a politician have special treatment? Well, my point is, he shouldn't get away with beating either an ordinary citizen or a politician. He was caught on video and the evidence is clear. Nothing to do with politicians being above the law.

Peggy

The message is clear to the public (even if it is not to you) - politicians are above the law, and there is no justice for ordinary folk.
(bganon, 7 April 2010 00:37)
=======================

So, how do you come to that conclusion?
Now if the politician hits a member of public and nothing happens then you might be etitled to say that, but not in this case.

Attacks on politicians, members of police or any other public servant going about his/her business should be punished more harshly than attacks on ordinary members of public.
We have to send a clear message than it won't be tolerated.

Your bias is showing and telling us that it's not is only insulting our intelligence.
