Merkel put it beautifully, and I hope that the big EU countries stick to this policy. Last the EU needs in its state is vast hordes of destitute Anatolians flooding Europe.

Excellent post, Leonidas!

And we can witness what trouble those anatolians left behind in the balkans can cause.

By the non expense for Germany?

Hmmmm, how typical man would say.
Just something like when in Berlin in 1994, "50 YEARS" after WWII, Germans were to build "Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe": main condition was that it can cost not more then 15 million DM (€ 7.5 million). Some people never change.

The chancellor has previously stated that, rather than full EU membership, she would prefer to see Turkey be given a "privileged partnership" with the bloc.

Merkel was right to tell the Turks that EU membership won't be on table for them. There are several contributing reasons.

Firstly,Turkey is not a European country but an Asian one and therefore beyond the EU borders.

Secondly.the EU cannot absorb
such a large andeconomically backward state which given the size of the country would bankrupt the EU and totally unbalance the decision-making process.

Thirdly, despite the denials of EU bureaucrats, the EU is a
Christian club and won't accept within thie ranks a state which refuses to seculirise its politics(AKPis
a religious party) so as to leave Europe free from radical islam.

Fourthly,it's the matter of European opposition against Turkish membership.West European countries with large
numbers of Turkish immigrants
have solid majorities against
the influx of more muslim immigrants.

I think Merkel was right to be honest with Erdogan and say it straight to him that membership isn't going to happen in the near future or ever and instead pursue some kind of association with the EU which will be for benefit of both.
