Will that broken record ever be fixed?

Serbia would still be in the EU before Romania and Bulgaria if they hadn't been let in for free, something which Brussels deeply regrets.

Brussels changes and breaks the rules as it sees fit, even if it is to its own ultimate detriment. If they want a country in earlier or later, then they will make it so. It has nothing to do with their apparently inflexible rules.

Aleks,

Once Serbia starts accession negotiations with the EU it will take her 7 years to join the EU.

For example, if Serbia begins accession negotiations in 2012 the negotiations could be finished in 2016.

Serbia's Accession Treaty would be signed in 2017.

Then, the Accession Treaty would be ratified by the parliaments of EU member states and by the Serbian parliament during the course of 2017 and 2018.

After the ratification process is finished Serbia would join the EU on 1 January 2019.

Do you think that Serbia can join the EU in less than 7 years?

If so, then you do not know how complicated the accession process is.

You will see what I am talking about when Serbia will begin the accession negotiations.

Wow, two ignorant statements in a row.

From our resident romanian EU 'expert', his simplistic reasoning is that if it takes 7 years for Croatia to join then it will take 7 years for Serbia to join. Well all it proves is that he can count. He still hasn't predicted anything correctly. Hilarious.

From our militant albanian friend, Serbia apparently needs the agreement of 'Kosovo/Albania'. They have a veto? If this were even close to any kind of reality, then there's no way Kosovo/Albanian could join the EU before Serbia. It would be cutting one's nose of despite the face. Again, simply hilarious.

Guessing a date is a fools game. It is really up to Brussels how much they want Serbia in the EU and up to Tadic/whomever about how hard to fight for their own national sovereignty. Serbia has nothing to loose as it is not in Brussel's interest to punish Serbia and thus destabilize the Balkans further, especially considering the continued bad problems with Bg, Ro and the pain Greece will be going through over the next few years. Serbia will only grow stronger. If Brussels don't like it, then they can kiss their balkan stability pact goodbye.

Dear Mircea,

When the questions come about the EU and Serbia you jump immediately, just like an automatic bot.

However, you fail to calculate Serbia's implications toward neighbours. Although my calculations were more or less with yours, my estimates change, and Serbia, the earliest can join in 2025, providng Kosovo/Albania, and Croatia give a green light.

Croatia started accession negotiations with the EU in 2005 and will join the EU in 2012.

If Serbia begins accession negotiations with the EU in 2012 the country could join the EU in 2019.

If accession negotiations will start in 2013 Serbia could join the EU in 2020.
